Decoding engine casting numbers- first timer
The engine in my 66 C-10 is I believe a 350 from what I have been researching, but I figure ask those who know.
I finally located the numbers struck onto the block and there were 2 sets of numbers. They were stamped onto the passenger side (facing front of motor) on a ledge just infront of the valve cover. It reads like so: C5A146997 V0507TJH From the info I could find after searching online I got the 2nd portion semi decoded from this site http://www.thedirtforum.com/gmcastin...rlocations.htm V= Flint Plant 05 = May 07 =Day T = Truck? but the JH part I couldnt find info on the site listed above This site mentioned the suffix code on this page http://www.nastyz28.com/gm-chevy-cod...s-suffix-7.php but there were 2 entries for TJH and the years were 73 and 76, both showed a 350 type so I am pretty sure its a 350 but from what? Maybe it doesnt matter a bunch but as I try to get the drive line figured out it might be handy to know. I also was able to reach in and get an imprint of what's stamped onto 2 areas on the engine flange near the bell housing. ![]() ![]() There were also numbers on top of the engine right in front of the distributor ![]() And this one just down in front of the distributor E236 ![]() And this one directly in front of the carb with the firing order if it helps ![]() Trying to learn what these numbers are referring to (except firing order) and to double check my research and ask the pros here. Re: Decoding engine casting numbers- first timer
TJH is the suffix for a 1973 Chevy truck 350 with a manual trans. This was in my 1973-1976 Chevy truck parts book. After 1970 they went to the 3 letter suffix code. Also that casting number ending in 010 is a 350 block.Jon

Re: Decoding engine casting numbers- first timer
Thanks Jon!
I was looking through the FAQ's and saw all this for the Casting number I have: 3970010 350 69 Corvette late 69,4 bolt main 3970010 302 69 Camaro Z/28,Late 69, 4 bolt main 3970010 350 69-79 Truck 2&4 bolt main 3970010 350 69-79 Pass,Chevelle,Camaro,Nova,Monte Carlo 2&4 bolt main 3970010 350 70 Corvette 300,350,370 HP 4 bolt main 3970010 350 71 Corvette 270,330 HP 4 bolt main 3970010 350 72 Corvette 200,255 HP 4 bolt main So the 1973 year matches up with what you provided, but is the number I have under the distributor E236 mean May, 23, 1976? ![]() |

Re: Decoding engine casting numbers- first timer
No, not exactly, the intake as I stated in my second post is from a 1966 Impala so the 6 is for 1966. Dates on 1970 and up castings will be 73 or 76. Your block could be an early casting, part of the 1973 production year and be a 72 with the month and day making it part of the 1973 production year. It will be back by the casting number of the block I think on the other side. Judging by the machine date 05 = May 07 =Day it will be 73 though.

Re: Decoding engine casting numbers- first timer
I see now, I thought it was the engine casting date and didn't realize the intake manifold was from a 1966 327 Impala. Great to know where all of these parts are from.
I'll keep looking for the engine casting date, but knowing that the engine is a 350 from a 1973 truck says alot. The manual transmission you mentioned associated to this engine makes me wonder if that is why the powerglide is having issues leaking and that there is a linkage that is not hooked up to a rod or cable. Over the years two transmission shops have told me that the leak can not be stopped for some reason, but I'll get another thread going on that. ![]() I really appreciate your help on this Jon! |

Re: Decoding engine casting numbers- first timer
Well, the trans really has nothing to do with the engine as far as leaking or linkage. Power glides, all of mine leak , LOL. Especially if they sit a long time. Hey, Welcome to the group and NICE truck ! Jon
