Buying a used 700r4 question
I am looking to eventually buy a used 700r4 and stick it in my '68.
My question is: If I purchase a 700r4 that came out of a truck, from 87-92, do I need to do all the upgrades that are typically necessary to put them into our trucks? It seems that if they were in a truck already, it should be able to handle my truck. Obviously, I'd get it rebuilt for piece of mind, but rebuilding it to stock should be a little cheaper, I would think. I am not planning on rodding this thing out. I may tow a small camping trailer, but nothing over 16'.

Re: Buying a used 700r4 question
If your truck is more than a half ton you might want to change the yoke to a stronger one. I see so many guys running 60E and 80E transmissions but I think they forget about the simpler and equally strong 700. The proper stall speed convertor with this trans will give you many happy miles.

It's just a half ton with a 307. I may go to a 350, some day, but it won't be anything too beefed up. More or less stock.

Re: Buying a used 700r4 question
Stock trans should do you just fine. Once you are in there most of the upgrades are not that expensive. But like you said, it's not being hot rodded so stock should do fine. The one thing you might want to consider is to modify the center bearing for a modern one. Talk to your trans shop about it. I went through 2 center bearings on my 3/4 ton before I modified it.

Re: Buying a used 700r4 question
Depending on the truck, you may can go to a 1-pc shaft and get rid of the center bearing.
A stock rebuild should be fine. If your core is from a police car or Corvette it will have the best stock guts already. The later the better on a core. 87 and up for sure.
