Loses power when downshifts

Got a 70 c10 With a v8 and an automatic tranny with a new quadrajet and new plugs and wires. Truck runs great until you start climbing a long hill. As soon as I press tge gas to compensate for the lose of speed the truck will downshift but gains no power or speed. In fact the more I let off the gas the more it will accelerate until it up shifts again just to start the process all over again.
Any ideas?

Thanks
Biscuit

Hmm the exhaust seems to flow freely. Strong acceleration in lower gears when starting out but falls on its face when I'm going uphill and downshift.

Sounds like it might be a lean condition. What happens on level ground with quad open.. does it bog? If it does might be float set low.

Re: Loses power when downshifts

Seems to run strong on flat ground. Pulls real hard in second. Seems slow to downshift alot though.

Re: Loses power when downshifts

according to your statement it sounds lean as if the metering rods are stuck.

sometimes the power piston sticks on the quads.

Re: Loses power when downshifts

id pull the top plate n check the floats [n other stuff], and install a set of brass floats from napa while your in there. [fyi GM made it so you can do that without removing the whole carb]
