Smells like gas!!

New guy here. Just got my 72' chevy c10 yesterday. Drove it around all yesterday and the smell of gas was pretty intense. My buddies(c10 owners) and I looked at it and it seems the sender on the gas tank was not sealed all the way. We put some cable ties on the tubes that were kind of loose and I believe we sealed the tank properly. Just wanted to run this by you guys.

Thankfully I'm not a big smoker but I believe I was high on gas fumes all day yesterday, haha. I'm keeping the windows open for a couple days and I think the smell has subsided a little.

Anyone have experience with gas leaks? Or similar issues? I'd love some feedback. Thanks!!

That sending unit lock ring is no where near fully installed. Tap it around in the clockwise direction until its against the stops.

It's a basic lock gas cap. It's old and the rubber is shoddy so I will be getting a new one soon. Any suggestions?

Re: Smells like gas!!

Seat the sending unit down tight and get a new gas cap from the parts store. That will fix your smell I'd bet.

Thanks a lot. I knocked it around and it's against the stoppers now. Glad to have you guys on here. I'll be getting a better gas cap asap too.

Re: Smells like gas!!

Do you have a gasket between the lock ring and the tank?

Yes I do and it's pretty crappy. There's an outside gasket and an inside gasket and I was thinking of just replacing them both rather than buying a new cap.

Re: Smells like gas!!

that gas tank should have another gas;ine coming out of it and it goes up into the passenger side door pillar/// many make the mistake of getting rid of it when they throw away the charcoal cannister that vents into the carb

that tank should NOT have a vented gas cap

I think I got mine from either NAPA or Carquest. Either way make sure it fits snug and has the vent on it.

Re. gas smell. If the above suggestions don't help, the fuel tank may have microscopic pin holes under it. Moisture accumulates on the bottom and tends to rust them out. My 68 had several and they would just ooze out enough gas to make it smell inside but not enough to create puddle. I found them by removing the seat and checking carefully with a flash light under the tank. They were just small, discolored moist spots.

Here's a pic of a vented cap and what you should look for. The part inside the hole is spring loaded and should move slightly when depressed.

CDowns is correct on this note.......My 72 had the tank behind the seat still and I was always smelling fumes. Figured out the vent line on the passenger side of the tank was no longer attached to a charcoal tank or whatever its suppose to vent into........and all the PO had done was loop the vent tube around and zip it up. Was venting in the cab all the time.
Ofcourse, I solved the issue with removing the tank out of my cab and installing a frame tank instead.

Yeah, that's true for that year truck. Totally missed that.
