Dash Pad Replacement Questions

I'm interested in getting a new dash pad for my truck. Actually, my wife asked if I wanted one for my birthday/anniversary/Valentine's day. The dealer, when I asked about a year ago, wanted almost $400 for one, so that is out of the question. Chevy Duty gets $275.

I tried looking it up at www.gmpartsdirect.com, but can never find anything there without a part number. Does anyone know the part number for an '86 Silverado dash?

Am I safe in assuming I will have to take whatever color is available and dye it to match my interior?

Someone (5-8 Chevy, maybe...) posted a link to a dealer somewhere that ships parts cheap. Does anyone recall the name of the dealer?

Chevy Duty also sells a urethane replacement pad for $224. How well do the repros fit? Does the urethand hold up any better than the factory dashes?

Thanks,

Slonaker

The part number is 15641405. They sell it for $185 and change. I checked just to see what it would cost me by the time it arrived at my house. The total was $235.44, which includes tax since they are in NC.

I bought mine from the dealer for $217.60. This is wholesale price, which if you will ask them real nice, since they don't know you yet, you may could get it for wholesale.

Anyway, they only come primed gray. You have to dye them to match. I recommend buying your dye from Eastwoood.

Thumbs up

You might check Ebay. I bought a GM Reproduction one in black for $199 and $20 shipping, making it a $219 investment.

Thanks for the part number, Mike. I'm in Texas, so there should be no tax. It looks like it would be about $223 shipped based on their estimated shipping cost. After buying a couple of hundered dollars worth of parts over about a 2 month period, I tried to get a better price from the dealer. The best I could get was 15% off full retail. Not much of a discount.

Mitch. Thanks for the info. I am not an ebay user. I keep saying I will do it, but never get around to it. For about the same price, I think I would prefer the dealer part.

I always get my GM parts from Jason Cromer at Sam Taylor Buick.
http://www.samtaylor.com/html/parts.html

Ask for Cromer to get the "good" price.

Jason Cromer quoted me a price of $195, and estimated shipping to be about $50-$60. Ouch.

Maybe if I print out the page fom gmparts direct.com my local dealer will be willing to deal a little. I prefer to spend my money locally, but not if they plan to poke my eyes out on the price.

Yep. That's the color I need. Is it the reproduction or the OEM?

try this site too www.chevyparts.com . This is where I found my motor mount towers and had tehm shipped in UPS NDA from Las Vegas, damn freight cost more than the parts, but I needed them quick.

EDIT

Looks like they are not cheaper on this one, but keep them in mind when you are looking for something.

Can you get a pic of the driver side edge to show what you are talking about?

When it comes to dye, I highly recommed SEM products from your local paint store. I had some blue mixed up when I put a GM dash pad in my 84 back in 96. I painted it with a Devilbiss JGA gun in a heated shop. It still looks like the day I put it in, and that says a lot. I lived in Florida for a year, Connecticut for 3 years, New York for year and then back up here in Washington for two years. It has been exposed to all kinds of weather and extreme temps. No cracking, fading, chipping peeling etc. I won't buy anything but a GM dash pad and SEM dye for any of my other trucks.
