What do you guys think its worth?

I'm looking to buy back the truck i had in high school from my cousin and need a little help on what its worth. Ok its a 70 swb that was built in the mid 90s so it has some dated 15" weld wheels (still in decent shape) and flame paint job. It now has a 396 in it not original and fairly fresh. The bad is the bottom of the doors are starting to rust and the area around the drip rails has rust along with cab supports starting to rust.. So its a rusty driver that has a dated look with a none original bbc, th350, ps, and power disc brakes.

Re: What do you guys think its worth?

The question is what is it worth to you? Do you have a personal attraction to this truck. Do you regret you ever sold it? If not, I would treat it as any other truck in the same condition.

The paint and outdated wheels can be changed. It depends on how bad the cab is and would a cab swap be more economical and time saving. Doors can be found rust free. The rust around the drip rails would scare me. That is a lot of work to repair and make last.

It sounds like a nice solid running driver with some cosmetic issues.

Do some comparative shopping and see what others in the same condition go for.

Re: What do you guys think its worth?

I agree with T-Bone. Rockers and doors are always a feasible repair.....but I would really want to see what the depth of the drip rail rust is. I would do a ice pic test on it. Most looks like surface pop more than cancer. Usually caused by bad paint sealer allowing deep paint flake. But if you lightly poke an ice pick in a few rust spots and it goes past the tip......you are going to need serious work.
Keep in mind, Do you want the truck no matter what, or is it simply a new toy to restore and have fun with. If you just want a toy to play with keep an open mind on your budget.

Re: What do you guys think its worth?

To me its worth more because of the history but at the same time I dont want to over spend on something because of history. Being in the shape its in when it got fixed it wouldn't go back the same way so it wont ever be the same truck. I was wanting more to know what a rusty shorty driver is worth in this market. I know all trucks are not the same, but am I looking in the 3-5k range 5-8k or 8-10?

Re: What do you guys think its worth?

Would need to see pics of the whole truck, and some of the engine as well.

If it's as you say, "just a rusty shortie, with a bbc and TH350"... then to me it's not worth all that much. MAYBE $3,000 bucks.

What would a similar truck cost within say 250 miles of you? The rust to value ratio is a very regional number.

Re: What do you guys think its worth?

I think the history would be a large factor but otherwise I am with Gary at $3000. Hopefully your cousin wont try to capitalize off of your history with it. If there were no rust around the drip rail it could increase significantly. Nice looking truck but the drip rail rust is a bit scary and will chase off a lot of potential buyers.

Before I read this post I was going to say that if it were mine, I for sure wouldn't take less than $4,500 for it. I sold (and re-purchased) my truck for that last year, and it needed new doors.

Re: What do you guys think its worth?

I offered him 3,500 for it this morning, but wasnt sure if I was low balling him and I didn't want to do that to family. That's really all I wanted to give for it in the condition its in. He said he would have to think about it and he would get back with me.

With that kind of rust...not worth it in my opinion.
