1964 c10 starting issue
when attempting to start my truck from inside the cab I get nothing !! unless I run a remote from the battery to the starter,it will crank over.I have power in the cab at the ignition switch,on the pink and the red with the key on,in the crank position the purple is hot.but will not crank over.I installed a new engine harness and a coil thinking this was my problem.it didnt work.can it be in the alternator wire harness maybe? or the horn relay?
my underdash harness is good and intach.why does nothing happen when you turn the key. |

Re: 1964 c10 starting issue
If you have power to the purple wire (when it start position at the key) at the starter and a good connection from the battery cable to the starter, you should be good.
The horn relay or alternator wiring have nothing to do with your problem Do you have a neutral safety switch? See if you have power on the purple wire at the starter solenoid and trace back from there. |

Re: 1964 c10 starting issue
You will know if you do as the purple wire would pass through it and would prevent power from getting to the starter if the truck was not in park or neutral. I am not sure if they even had them in 64. My 64 does not but it is a 4 speed on the floor. If you have added or the PO added a late model steering column, you may have one.
If not, then you should have a direct connection from the ign switch to the starter. You need to have power on the purple wire when in crank position. Make sure you have a good clean connection where the engine harness attaches at the firewall. |

Re: 1964 c10 starting issue
so when i got this 64 last month it didnt have a Trans.it look like at one time it was a 3on the tree, then looks like it went to on the floor.so moving ahead when I got it,I threw a powerglid in it and still would not turn over inside.and afther l look at the cut up harness on the firewall with a ballast resistor I install a new engine harness for non gauge and the main harness under the dash was also cut up at both the engine plug ands the ignition switch replace the under dash harness with a good used one and it dose have a plug by the ignition switch with two purple wires.they are not hot when cranking

Re: 1964 c10 starting issue
you're going to have to trace down some circuits, rawraw. the purple wire should eventually end up at the starter. if the truck came from the factory with an auto it would have had a neutral safety switch. regardless, check the starter to make sure the purple wire is hooked to the right post, the one labled "s". if you've hooked it to the "i" post, it won't energize the starter solenoid (sometimes the "i" post is labled "r")

Re: 1964 c10 starting issue
Here is a simple procedure for you to try.
From the ignition switch where the purple wire starts, hook up a separate wire from that point to the "S' terminal on the starter and see what happens. I would use at least a 14 gauge wire with alligator clips on both ends. If this works, you now know for sure that you are loosing the connection in the harness somewhere. |

Re: 1964 c10 starting issue
here is the purple wire under the dash.not sure if this is for the neutral safety switch.I check to see if there is continuity at the switch with the hot and the purple and there is.d i need a jumper on the purple wire? so now I will try the jumper from the s teminal on the in side of the starter to the switch.

Re: 1964 c10 starting issue
before you do, if it's not too late, that's looks very much like a plug for a neutral safety switch. check to see if one of those purple wires on the plug gets energized when you put the key in start position. if so, you can just jump the 2 purple's together right at the plug.
also, is there a wire presently attached to the "s" post? is it getting voltage when you turn the switch to start?

Re: 1964 c10 starting issue
That is your problem for sure. The harness is made for a neutral safety switch. You will, like Larry stated, need to jumper that connector and your problem is solved.
MAKE SURE IT IS IN PARK OR NEUTRAL WHEN STARTING. Is your truck an auto trans with the shifter on the column? If it is, you may have a safety switch in place. It will be on the top of the steering column under the dash near the firewall. Keep us posted. |

Re: 1964 c10 starting issue
Glad to help. If you get the point gap closer to 018" that would be the best. If you have access to a dwell meter, then 30 degress is what you want.
Good luck getting it started. I know that is a great feeling when you have not heard it run for a while. Keep us updated on your progress. |
