Electric Truck
Has anyone tried to build an electric truck with a 60 to 66 chevy C-10. I thought of this when I saw VIA Motors building an electric truck for chevrolet. Thanks Jeff.

Re: Electric Truck
That would not be a electric truck, its just a gas powered truck with electric drive like those big mining trucks or a locomotive. it can only go 40 miles on the batteries, I can get that far in some places by just coasting down hill.

Re: Electric Truck
I would love to have a electric 60-66 as a daily commuter!
A guy from great falls mt built an all electric s/10, range is about 90 miles, he had batteries shoved into every nook and cranny in that thing.... makes me think: I should see how far I really drive around here on a daily basis... wonder if the 40 mile range is reasonable?

Re: Electric Truck
I saw an episode of Jay Leno's Garage about these. The engine actually runs the generator portion to supply power to the electric motor, if I remember correctly. The engine runs at a constand low rpm,so is very quiet and uses very little fuel.
Would be a cool deal to swap a '60-66 bodyon one of these chassis. |

Re: Electric Truck
Will it come with pre-recorded vroom vroom sounds from the faux exhaust pipes?

Re: Electric Truck
I thought about the same thing, take a long bed 66, stuff it full of batteries, mount a electric motor to the 3 speed trans and have fun. The range would be about 100 miles and I only drive 24 miles total each day. It should work well and wouldn't it be cool to have a lowered classy looking 60-66 with a tonneau cover to just drive around town......at very little cost....

Re: Electric Truck
I think at this point, the technology is so primitive and the cost so high that making an electric classic truck at this point could not be accomplished by most of us DIY'ers on our kind of budget. It is a cool idea though and would be interesting to see where the technology goes from here.
Also, there would be REAL exhaust as the V6 will be the prime mover for the generator, it will just be at a constant RPM to make the required hertz for the gen output. Probably 1800 RPM would be most efficient an most suitable if it was a 4 pole generator. My only question would be how will the V6 hold up to numerous starts and stops and shooting straight to 1800 RPM at start up.

Re: Electric Truck
I have my diesel car that is my $$$ saver. I have the truck because it goes vroom vroom and puts a huge smile on my face to drive it. Ripping it's heart out and giving it an electric motor would be like taking my heart out and replacing it with a pacemaker. Leave the electric stuff to the Honda you dust as you go by. Remember Chevy's old add "Heartbeat of America" Don't steal it's heart guys. Electric is cool and homemade diesel at 30 cents a gallon rocks. Oops different forum.

Re: Electric Truck
I drive a chevy volt Same principle About 40 miles on battery then gas generator kicks in but I rarely drive over 40 miles a day so gas average from day one is about 125 mpg I once went 2860 miles and only used 1.2 gallons
