Re: SM-420 shift boot
Me three. There's one on ebay that has the chevy bowtie on it.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/47-50-53-55-...56b5e8&vxp=mtr There's also this style without the logo and a different top design. http://www.ebay.com/itm/47-49-50-52-...70915182056%26

Re: SM-420 shift boot
From what I've looked at on this subject. The four speed shifter never came with a boot. They had a foam doughnut between the Transmission Casing and High Hump floor pan.
The Transfer Case Control Lever had a simple flat rubber disk with a slit with a few relief cuts to each side of the slit where the Lever was in one of the positions.

Re: SM-420 shift boot
I hate to digress but I don't see why anyone would use on of those reverse light switches that attaches to the upper part of the shifter. It is a pretty straight forward modification to drill and tap the back left corner of the transmission cover, right above the reverse shift rail, and install a standard switch in there. it would make for a much cleaner installation, in my opinion, unless you are going for the 100% original type rebuild.

Re: SM-420 shift boot
From 1960-1966 on the SM-420 trans they did not have a boot on the interior of the truck. They used a seal that sat around the shifter on top of the transmission. You then installed the floor over the seal and this is what kept air/exhaust out of the cab. All of those boots on EBay are simply something that was made to solve a problem and make things "look" nice for these transmissions. None of my 4x4 trucks have boots. Although my 61 4x4 Panel has the short 2358354 boot still on it. Heres some pictures of the correct under floor shifter seal. Also, from 1960-1962 the seal was the same as pictured but it was shorter 1-13/32 3766203 and 63-66 was 2-21/32 3766204.

Re: SM-420 shift boot
I find this strange that no boot was provided, yet it explains why no boot was found in my '65 Suburban. Everything else in that truck is original, untouched, intact, complete, etc.
Also, back when I first got it, I don't think it had seen much use for quite some time. Then after driving it around awhile I noticed strange black rubbery goo slowly dripping off the top of the trans onto the driveway. This I am now convinced was the foam seal that had degraded with time and was melting with the heat of the trans. At the time I thought it might be the remains of the missing boot that was melting, but now the foam seal makes more sense. Oh btw Jon (60-66), I am continually impressed with the completeness of your truck and parts obsession. You provide a very valuable service to the serious truck enthusiast. Thanks for that.
