Turbo my inline?

I know this sounds a little different but i want to turbo my 235 chevy stovebolt. It is in a 58 chevy apache longbox sm420 with factory rearend. the motor was rebuild 3 or 4 years ago and was used in a hay sweep and is still a good running engine. I have heard that on a stock motor you can run under 8psi boost, so i have since acquired a turbo off of a 3406E Caterpillar and wonder if i can back the waistgate off to about 6psi and the motor still be able to hold.

Re: Turbo my inline?

I am also thinking of using a blowthru set up with one or two 2gc carbs

Re: Turbo my inline?

You have a LOT to start thinking about when going with a turbo setup! I dont know your experience with turbo's... but a turbo off of 14.6L engine will NOT boost your 235 cu in motor! you might start to build 1 psi at redline with that turbo. You can check out my build thread for turbo specs, or start looking on theturboforums.com to start your research. on a 235 you will want a .59-.63 a/r exhaust housing with a mid 50's trim turbine. you will have full boost by 2500 rpm and can limit your boost level with a good wastegate, you will want to go blow through. Yes draw thorough (not suck through) can be done with superchargers, but with a turbo setup your carb will turn to a solid ice block. If you are new to blowthrough carb tuning, only go with a single double pumper carb setup as this is hard enough, and to try to sync two carbs would be difficult for even the most experienced tuners. Good luck and welcome to the boosted world!

Re: Turbo my inline?

Research, research, research. I wanted to turbo my 250, but sold it and went with a 383 stroker because I wanted to go fast, and sound mean. Listen to Adam (longbed67), he has done his homework and really knows his stuff. Also do a search on a guy named Boucher, and his "Turbo JED" build. I've met him, and seen the truck, and they're both awesome. Get Leo Santucci's Inline Power Manual. If you want to have a turbo inline for the uniqueness, then more power to ya! if you just want to have a more powerful truck, swap in a v8. Inline power is really expensive. It's also really cool. You just have to decide what your real goals are!

Re: Turbo my inline?

Hey longbed67 i dont know much about turbos but i have ditched the giant turbo and was wondering if a gm turbo off of a 6.5td would be more the style im looking for since there are about 7 or so sitting in a local junkyard. Also these turbos come with there own wastegate for the 6.5 limited to 8 psi are these a reliable unit? I also have decided on a single carb but how big should it be considering the stock 235 just had a single rochester b.

Re: Turbo my inline?

reliable yes, still WAY to big! even most of the holsets off of the cummins are way to big! and the holset specs are hard to get,Before you continue to jump on the turbo bandwagon and end up dumping a lot of money on things that may not even be right for your setup, you need to do some serious research on the different types of turbos, flanges, wheels, center sections, trims, housings, and what size works best for your target boost level and powerband, and become educated on what you are doing. If you have the cash to fork out for someone else to do it for you, I would gladly build you a kit for your set up as I have done for many others. I have provided some good starting points as far as size to look for above, if you deviate outside those specs you better be ready to either fry your turbo, engine, or both.

Re: Turbo my inline?

If you want to learn about turbos, get on The Turbo Forums, thats where I learned all the stuff I needed to know and built a twin turbo system on my 72 vette. Tons of information on there.
