Re: 67-72 frames

To the best of my knowledge they are the same overall. That being said, there are coil spring and leaf spring rear ends, 6 lug or 5 lug, and I believe some axle widths in the rear are slightly different. I'm sure others can point out more specifics.

Re: 67-72 frames

The 67 frames don't have a dimple for the power steering. You need a bfh to manufacture one and then you can bolt the power steering gear on the frame.

Re: 67-72 frames

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I think the 62-66 frames are the same as 67-72.

Re: 67-72 frames

the 62-66 frames have a different radiator crossmember, the front is different for the bumper and the rear cab mounts and radiator support mounts have to be moved, we put a 63 on a 70 frame, as far as the front for the bumper we cut the ends off the 63 frame and welded them on the 70 frame

Re: 67-72 frames

The 67 power steering recess aka "dimple" is the most notable as others have said.

Another oddity on 67 frames is the flanges on either side of the engine are wider than later trucks. I have read this was because the BBC was offerend in 1968 and up. The flanges were then narrowed to make room for the bbc exhaust. The flanges measure 2.5" on a 1967 frame and 1.8" on 1968-72 frames. It may seem like nothing but will become a pita if you run headers even on an sbc and a nightmare if you want to run headers on a bbc. (the rails will need to be trimmed to clear your headers)

You also have to consider the core support mounts, the holes come in two different sizes. One version for 67-8 and then 69-72. This is pretty easy to overcome.

Some later frames have a section of the lower flange rolled down under the cab. Not sure what this was for, maybe ease of installing the trans x member??

To identify a frame year by the partial vin locate the stampings either under the cab on the top rail and/or on top of the frame between the upper control arm and steering gear box. The first number is the year. The partial vin will be like this:

7A123456 7=1967 A= Atlanta assembly 123456= assembly sequence
8A123456 8=1968
9A123456 9=1969

etc
