Help me make the best of what I have

Took on a weekend project that turned into a winter project/ total resto on a friends '80 shortbox Chevy. All that is stopping me from getting my Camaro back in MY shop is the engine for this short box!

Id love to just order a crate motor, but just not in the budget. Sooo Its originally a 305 truck, have the orig 305. Also have a 305 "vortec"

What would you guys use/combine to make the best of what I have to work with?

(I am thinking vortec roller block, but being that 059 (305) vortec heads aren't a true "vortec" head - only marginally better than a tbi head, use the older heads so I can use an older style intake I have Layin around. Believe I would need to reuse the rocker arms from vortec motor.

Your thoughts?

I would use the Vortec 305, and get it running as cheaply as possible.

While not a powerhouse 305 Vortec are still better the 305 TBI or otherwise.

Aren't the rockers from the vortec engine the self-aligning style?
If so, they can't be used with the older heads.

I know the 4.3 is that way.

But if he uses the whole 305 Vortec with 305 Vortec cam he wouldn't have the issue.
