Supercharged 292
Anyone got any pictures of Supercharged 292's? I'm going that route.

Why and what are you thinking of using?

Re: Supercharged 292
Well I've always been the one to be different. Just cuz I don't want what everyone else has but only specific things. I figured since I already have a motor might as well build the one I've got. Been getting good ideas from Leo Santucci's book on inlines. Now I wanna build one. As far as I know, no one around my town has a built inline, but they may be hiding.

Re: Supercharged 292
Gonna use a blower off a 4-71 Detroit or a M90.

Re: Supercharged 292
This one's got a turbo. Inline 6s are the ideal configuration for turbo

Re: Supercharged 292
in that book there is a section on super chargers they do not recomend using a diesel super charger because they have to be build differently there are a few intakes that are produced that will accept certian super chargers a turbo is better because it does not draw horse power to create it and you wont run into clearance issues with your hood

Re: Supercharged 292
Being different is not the best reason for building a supercharged or a turbocharged engine. The 292 needs mods to use any additional flow effectively like bigger valve and headwork. Your tagline indicates actually says a no money build. Do the numbers but I'd bet you could do a crate engine for the same or less without the sorting of a supercharger installation and rebuilding the 292 engine. If you must try this a Paxton style superchager would probably be the least problematic allowing an existing aftermarket 4bbl manifold to be used with a blow through carb box.

Re: Supercharged 292
Diesel superchargers are there for a whole other reason, they come off of 2 stroke diesel engines and are there because the intake into the cylinder is just a hole in the cylinder wall. To keep the piston from pushing the mix back out that port you need a positive displacement air pump to keep the intake pressurized. It's also integrated into the engine design not simply bolted on so the bearings don't really translate to an after market application too well, this is what BDS and Wieand made their living at mostly, rework of Detroit Diesel blowers, particularly the bearing assemblies. Later they evolved to making the whole thing. I believe true X-71 Detroit Blowers are actually cast iron.
A turbo setup that addresses most the issues of turbochargers can get real elaborate and expensive and the old line that it's power for free is not really true. Turbos are like running an engine that has exponential power with an inversely exponentially restrictive exhaust. The bigger the turbo the bigger the lag, so run 2 smaller ones instead, but then to get boost at low RPM it's too much at high RPM, ass a waste gate, but it heats up the intake air, so add an intercooler, then it heats up the oil, so add more oil capacity and a big oil cooler, and on and on... I don't know the OP intentions, but unless you are using EFI to compensate for it, Turbos can be really peaky short powerband engines. Although superchargers may have some similar problems they are easier to deal with and you don't end up with more hot pipe under the hood than engine. Personally on a straight 6 I'd opt for a centrifugal over a roots type, smaller, lighter easier to mount, you can run it easily off a serpentine setup that also runs all your other stuff. In the end it would probably be cheaper to implement than the roots type even if you already own the blower. If I ever force air into the 24 valve DOHC straight 6 I'm putting into my truck that'd probably be the route I'd go. |

Re: Supercharged 292
I guess all you were asking was for supercharged 292 pictures. That turbo'd 36 pickup just came to mind and you re-sparked my desire to turbo a 292,which is a very viable consideration. I searched supercharged Chevy inline 6 and found pictures of everything but. There was one. I did find www.hotsixes.com . Check that out and I'm sure you'll come up with some ideas along with great support. The second picture is one I had in my motors folder already...NICE!*
*Not saying these are 292s,but Chevy 6s

Re: Supercharged 292
i like horsepower but love money too
to spend twice as much money for half the horsepower is not my ideal motor

Re: Supercharged 292
Building horsepower is a fun challenge no matter what the motor size. And,8.37 sec would beat a lot of V8s I've seen with a lot of money put in them.

Re: Supercharged 292
Being different, off the wall, strange, is always fun also! I've always thought a PMD OHC Q-Jet equipped six would look great in our style trucks. I think that six is a good looking engine!

Re: Supercharged 292
i have to disagree that a turbo is not free power because its run off engine gas rather than a pulley so it does not take away from the motor at all. and a turbo set up can be quite cheap at 6 lbs of boost the motor will make 350-400 hp which the stock components will handle to make it cheap you can get a turbo off of a similar sized motor and build a blow through set up which runs a box around the carburetor to equalize pressure inside and outside the carb otherwise you will watch every seal be pushed out of the carb to do a blow off valve on the cheap a 6 lbs radiator cap will do the job great one problem with a carb is you cannot retard timing like a efi system will so you will need to run a more retarded timing than normal on high octane gas possibly even race fuel if you can afford an efi system then you will have knock sensors and a computer controlled distributor that will solve the detonation problems

I was over on the 47-54 side and there is a thread over there that is talking about the turbo on the strait 6 as well. All good stuff I like the idea.

Re: Supercharged 292
I've thought about supercharging-in fact, I'm not really done thinking about it yet. It is a ton of money, and has to be done from the ground up if you want it to be a dependable street motor. I had two 292 blocks prepped-the one I'm building for my Panel, and one for--well, something else.
There is a supercharger manifold out there. It's like 500 bucks or so. Here's a good article on the subject: http://victorylibrary.com/mopar/blower-c.htm

And yeah,I do have 22 years. But,I never did say "I" was going to develop a straight 6 to kick V8 butt. Just showing someone who did. Before I was 22 years old I built a '56 VW that kicked V8 butt. So,been there, done that.

Re: Supercharged 292
Well I think being different is good and doing what everyone else does is fine too given that there is a lot of very popular V8s out there. Guess I'm the odd one out. Money is a big problem for me but I hope in the future it wont be. I just thought it would be cool to build a SIX either it be blown or a turbo. So on that note I'm just throwing out ideas.

Re: Supercharged 292
I think it's a great idea and I might be doing a project like this. codez67chevy it's your truck, your money, do what you want with it. I'm sure it will be cool whatever you do.
