best place for speakers without spending a fortune

I'm trying to figure out a way to put speakers in my truck that would be decent but not break my bank, cut any unnessisary holes or involves me removing my gas tank. The po cut the hole in the dash for a radio and seems like I have a crappy aftermarket speaker in the center of the dash. I know they make upgraded ones but I can't just have sound coming from there. Kick panels are an idea too. If anyone has pics of your setups please share. Oh mine is a 67 c10 btw

I just did a short write up in the kick panel thread on making your own. Rear corner speakers in your truck are also an option.

Would rear corner speakers work with my gas tank in the cab?

Yes, you can fit a 6.5 or 6x9 in there from what I understand.

What kind of speakers are you wanting seperates or sub-woofers? For subs you can build a center console sub or go under the seat with some fabrication.

Re: best place for speakers without spending a fortune

I have some old school 6x9 surface mount speakers from a garage sale for cheap that I plan on using under the seat .I tried them and they sound great .I also bought some water proof round speakers(4) from another garage sale ,brand new for $10 that I plan to use 2 of in the corner next to the gas tank. Not sure yet how Im going to mount those but will figure it out if the truck ever gets out of jail.

Re: best place for speakers without spending a fortune

I have a ton of stuff to do before I start in on the interior of my daily driver. But after 2 months of no radio I'm going nuts. I plan on getting a pair of TS-X200 from Pioneer and throwing them behind the seat on top of the gas tank on my '66. Thinking there is enough room for them there. Amazon has them for about 80 bucks a pair.

Re: best place for speakers without spending a fortune

I built a pair of 6.5" components and an amp into my center console. The PO cut holes in my doors already so I put some 6x9's there and added deadening. Sounds great, and no additional damage was done.

A center console wouldn't really work since I have a bench seat and an auto floor shifter, being under the seat would be an option. I'd like to put speakers in the kick panels and the one in the dash and most likely a sub under the seat. Thank you all for the responses and thank you all for making this the best forum for classic gm trucks

Re: best place for speakers without spending a fortune

I put two 4" speakers in place of the single 4x10 in the dash and two 6.5" components fit under the seat with no problem. You could do 6x9s as well, but I'm going to run two 6.5" jl subs next to my speakers, so they wouldn't fit together. I didn't want my passengers to accidentally kick the speakers and sometimes I put a lot of stuff in the cab so I didn't want to constantly worry about damaging them or the panel. Plus I like the hi/lo switch where it is on the floor.

EDIT: I also put an amp in the passenger side behind the seat in that little cubby.

Re: best place for speakers without spending a fortune

Wondering about this also. I went to a local stereo shop this week and he suggested putting a 8'' sub under the seat with 2 4'' round ones at the kick panels. I dont think the 4'' would sound good. Maybe 6.25'' there in a kick panel. The plastic set from here or LMC?

Re: best place for speakers without spending a fortune

I went the extra mile on speakers, I pulled the windshield out and cut holes as far outboard on the dash top as I could for 3 1/2" speakers. There was just enough room for the magnets above the cluster and glove box for clearance.
Though the problem I had back them was finding 3 1/2" speakers with nice covers. I did find them but the choices were few.
And I removed the gas tank and put 6X9's in the corners with custom speaker mounts.
And the sound is very nice, those small speakers bounce the sound off of the glass and gives very nice treble, and mid, and the 6X9's give nice mid, and base.
Glad I did it, it always gets attention from other 67-72 guys.
I have considered putting tweeters in the original center speaker location but it hasn't been a priority.
And as far as cutting the dash, do it, there are so much better radio choices out there that are DIN mount.
And putting 6X9's in the door or kick panel your just asking for water to destroy them.
I have mounted 6X9's in one of my trucks with a spring bottom seat to the bottom of the seat frame pointing down. The sound is decent, but to leave the fuel tank in the cab the choices are limited.

Re: best place for speakers without spending a fortune

Sounds innovative.Good ideas. With good window seal water damage is not an issue in the doors. I've never had such problems. GM puts them there since the '90s. Bose makes outdoor speakers and there are quality speakers made for boats, too.

Re: best place for speakers without spending a fortune

I made some kick panels ($20) bought 2 6.5" rockfords and 1 6"rockford for the dash. Then measured under my seats and bought 2 boxes with 10" rockfords and 800 watt amp. Minus the radio because it was already in the truck, I ony have $360.00 in it all. I like the old look radio, but also hooks up to ipod or phone. My woofers and amp can only be taken out if the seats are removed that if a thief comes along, hopefully I can catch them!

Re: best place for speakers without spending a fortune

Nice looking kick panels. Did you make those out of fiberglass? What did you use to mount them?

BTW, any pics of your woofers?

Re: best place for speakers without spending a fortune

I made them out of resin/fiberglass. Cut me out a template then went to work. I have them screwed in the metal then installed speaker. So far they are working out great.
Thanks.

Not sure it was already in the truck when I bought it.
