Radiator?

So my radiator is leaking a little. I am looking at replacing it, but need to know:

Do I have to have one that allows the transmission fluid run through the radiator or can I get a universal fit one and run the tranny cooler lines a different way?

What option/radiators should I consider? I am running an electric fan from the cherokee and the factory shroud. Need to keep that in place...

I assume you have an auto trans. If that's the case, you need some type of trans cooler. The AT won't live long without it. You could choose to run an external cooler, but you would likely spend more doing it that way. O'Reilly has a 4-core radiator for less than $200 and it's all metal.

You dont have to have a internal cooler. I wanted a race radiator so purchased all aluminum from PRC and bought extra large cooler to mount on front side.

The cooler set up on my truck has the hoses go through the radiator and then a small cooler on the front that it loops too. I was wondering if I can just skip the going through the radiator part and run straight to the tranny radiator/cooler?

Do you know a part number for the Oreilys radiator?

The auxiliary cooler in front of your radiator might not provide sufficient cooling by itself. I would just get the correct radiator (one with an internal trans cooler) and scrap the aux cooler *unless it's really needed for HD towing or hauling*.

the "cooler" in the radiator actually helps keep the tranny fluid at proper operating temps and gives longer life to transmissions

overcooling a transmission is a bad thing

You also get lifetime warrentey with O'Reillys. Get rid of external cooler, unless truck is used for towing all the time.

Unless your external cooler has a fan, I recommend using it inline with the in-radiator cooler. At lower speeds when towing, or when going up a grade at low speed, vehicle speed may not be enough to cool the external cooler.

I haven't fixed it yet, but my 71 has only an external cooler and it gets mighty hot. Even begins to smell a bit. I'd like to re-route my lines when I get the time/money.

Before I tore my truck down for a off frame restoration my tranny lines were ran to a external cooling loop. My tranny ran very hot. When I rebuild it I plan on running the tranny lines into the radiator and then through a external cooler and then back to the radiator. It is a th400 behind a 402. Just my 2 cents but my experience is that the external tranny cooler doesn't cut the mustard.

This 4 core is thicker, right? So if I go from a 3 core to this 4 core I will have to replace the upper and lower mounts (isolator and bracket), right?

Not to hijack the thread, but I just bought a 72 with the 402 and TH400 and I am in need of a radiator. What came in those trucks a 3 or 4 core, and would the one mentioned above from oriellys work for my application as well? Thanks.
