6.2 diesel into 1971 350 1/2 ton

I have searched Internet all over and am getting two different opinions, do you need the big block motor mounts or will the small block motor mounts work for a 1985 military 6.2 diesel? This motor does have the military exhaust manifolds on it, are they the same as the 6.2 civilian?

Im no expert but i thought the 6.2 was nothing but a 350 block with different top end.

I would say SBC mounts

5.7 diesel was a 350 block with diesel heads, 6.2 was made from the ground up to be diesel, I just hope when I drop it in the small block motor mounts work.

yes, the 6.2 diesel uses the same motor mounts as the sbc.

Thanks for the reply, I stated my question a little unclear the sbc motor mounts work but I heard that there is clearance issues with the exhaust manifolds and wondered how people got around this? It seems you have to cut the frame rails raised part off on top to clear exhaust manifolds has any one got any pictures of this or can confirm what I am saying?

I'v done a lot of research on this, you will need to use big block towers and the SBC motor mounts. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=254096 he has a write up all about it.

Hey thanks for the link, I ended up putting on the small block motor mounts and the sb frame rails and cutting out where they hit, then braced and welded up the rails underneath. The motors drivers side rear part of the valve cover also hits the cab and has to be cut out and modified. I am doing that today then bolt up the turbo 350 transmission.

Yeah i've read where quite a few people will modify their sbc towers and make it work. The BBC mounts from everything i've read and seen are direct bolt ons.

Turbo 350 trans bolts up no problem but you need diesel torque converter as gas one does not bolt up to flywheel as the holes do not line up they are 1/2 inch out. I'll have to order a rebuilt one tomorrow.

Re: 6.2 diesel into 1971 350 1/2 ton

I got the th400 torque converter bolted up, 350 trans installed and motor mounts all bolted in. I now have to make mounts for alternator, power steering p/p, all from 350 motor and hook up aftermarket 5 micron diesel fuel filter, return line to fuel tank, and vented cap, then fire it up. Then i can enjoy the fuel economy of the diesel, hoping to get 24 mpg (canadian gallon). This truck is swb with 3.73 rear end, th 350 trans, th400 torque converter and 6.2 diesel military n/a, it should run about 2200 rpm at 55 mph. These motors seem to get best mpg at around 1600-1800 rpm and I will eventually install 700r4 trans to get 1600 rpm when th350 gives out to get motor at this low of rpm and get 28 mpg, or go with just a 3.08 rear end to run 1800 rpm. I can also now run farm fuel with is 30 % cheaper than gas per gallon, this would be like getting 32 mpg without even changing the rear end or th 350 transmission.

Re: 6.2 diesel into 1971 350 1/2 ton

Fired motor up today, it ran fine and smoothed out once the air finally got all out of the system. Now I just need to hook up throttle cable and fix transmission cracked line then take it on a road trip.

Re: 6.2 diesel into 1971 350 1/2 ton

I went out on road trip today, motor ran fine, and trans shifted out of first at 20 mph and out of 2nd at 37 mph. I had heard you need diesel governor in trans but I couldn't be more happy at where the shift points are with gas governor. All in all it's was a good swap.
