front driveshaft flex need help!

okay so my front driveshaft is just a hair to overflexed and when i hammer the gas it binds bad at the double cardon. it makes contact at the spots shown on the pic where the arrows are. sitting level you can see it is very close and there is wear on these spots where its hitting. now my question is can i go at these with an angle grinder to get more flex out of the driveshaft? or will i be shooting myself in the foot heading to more damage if i do that? i know i should buy a new driveshaft but they are so expensive i do not have the money for that now so any info on my idea would be awesome! thank you!

Re: front driveshaft flex need help!

I ran into the same thing on my 82 with 6" lift.Just took a grinder to the ears and shaved them a bit.It might not be the correct fix,but like you said, way cheaper than a new driveshaft.I don't get too abusive on it & she's been good since last Oct. I don't see how your running into that with just a 4" lift,my 80 & 86 have 4" with no problems.

Re: front driveshaft flex need help!

well i had a turbo 350 208 combo that was 6 inches longer i swapped in a 465/205 combo which is shorter had the driveshaft shortened by a local driveshaft shop and or course the shorter combo= higher angle to the front axle thats why with my 4" of lift im having problems. it was fine before the swap. when you shaved yours off you took those ears off im guessing then for the part by the t case did you just round off the corners im guessing? ill probably cut a small divit if you will in the flange for a little clearance also.would yours only do it when you hit the gas? thats whats boggeling my mind right now but the whole joint is good and tight no slop.

Re: front driveshaft flex need help!

Ya,I just ground the ears down & that's all it needed. It hit soon as it was put into 4wd,didn't make any difference if I hit the throttle or not.Not that it would matter with the 6.2 anyways...not a real torquey motor!! On my 80, it has much same combo as yours except 454, rest is 465/205 I put that 4" lift on more than 20 years ago & never had a contact problem.
