'70 axle width ?

I'm considering changing my '70 stepper to 5 lug rear and I know this has been covered elsewhere, but how can I determine if my rear axle housing is the narrow (early) or wide (late) width? Are the axle bearing the same for both?

Early housing is 55.5 from inside backing plate to other inside backing plate. Later rear housing is 57. I have a 1970 and have the 57" housing.

Re: '70 axle width ?

If you have the later (longer) rear end, check Advance Auto for axles. I bought some and they work well and were less than $160 to my door for the pair! Just order them for a '70.

Actually,... Just order them for a 71-72 if you want 5-lug,... and your truck has the wider '70 housing.

Ordering 71-72 will ensure you get the right parts. They are only offered in 5 lug if I remember correctly.

Re: '70 axle width ?

Axle length from the mounting surface of the axle itself to the end of the splines : 30 1/2 for the early housing, and 31 5/16 for the later housing
