Jack and jack stands on dirt isn't a good idea. Not surprised it fell. Good thing you weren't underneath it.

I did silly things when I was young too. Just another life lesson that you needed to learn. "Thou shalt not rob Peter to pay Paul". Thanks for sharing your woes. Now get your hiney out there and figure out how to get your rotors out of the dirt. And tomorrow....go to the junkyard and get yourself some beater tires to roll the burb around on.

"oops" is better than dead. So did the grille and bumper fall off too... like they do in the cartoons?

Re: i should get hit
Man, this scared me!
I have mine on a jack stand on dirt right now, same wheel even! I kept my 12 ton bottle jack up under there just in case the jack stand did sink or do something crazy. The bottle jack is on a piece of wood. Its been that way for 6? days. I picked up a new inner front fender awhile back and just finally put it on. Its been 6 days do to, being short a couple bolts, radiator wall needing some attention, cleaned up and painted that section while everything was open, family interruptions, etc Why does a couple hour project always turn into days???, such is life....

When I was in my teens I did some stuff that I wonder how in the hell I survived... Main thing about doing stupid stuff... you usually only do it once.

Re: i should get hit
A sheet of 1" exterior grade plywood and 2'x2' cement pavers can be a good investment.
I'm lucky to be alive but didn't realize it until I was done with my 30's. Consider what happened and why and take the time to digest it all and learn from it. Posted via Mobile Device

I am impressed that it hit the ground so hard it popped the hood open and silver stripe developed on the front quarter!

I learned the hard way. Cinderblock with board on top, failed and my 55 Chevy pinned my legs, when I was 17. You can't believe how fast it happens. The look on your rescuers face will be one of sheer terror. You don't want to do that to a family member or anyone really. I still take heat for it at family reunions. Getting your voice back after all the screaming takes a while to. Buy some Jack Stands, Safety is always the best investment. Wood or Steel, NEVER Concrete

Re: i should get hit
I get it now. Move the truck to a better location so that the base is stable rather than creating one. Makes me worry about my house. It's on cinder blocks. Could kill a bunch of people during a party. But why would they build it if liability could be an issue? I think my house weighs more than my truck. Yikes!

Re: i should get hit
There is no better way that a lift. Wish I had one.
For jack stands in the yard I would use lumber base or a steel plate. Jack stands with no base in the yard isn't safe, very true. After my experience I just can't trust concrete. Even pavers will crack under the right circumstances. Not as easy as a cinderblock but it’s still possible. When ever I use jack stands with a proper base, I still put steel wheels (laid down)under the frame as a back up. Along with the hydraulic jack used to get the truck on the jack stands. And chock the Wheels. Always chock the wheels. When it comes to advising the new truck guys, might as well start them with steel. If my son was doing the job in this post, I would have him using jack stands with a steel base or two layers of 1' ply. With steel or lumber also under the frame and the rear wheels chocked. Also have the truck in park and the emergency brake on. But then again my other nickname is Safety Bruce My Grandfather got away with using cinderblocks with wood top his whole life. My father got away with it also. I had my setup exactly the way I was taught when the cinderblock failed. My father bought a new pair of jack stands the next day. No one in my family has ever used anything but steel or lumber since. I admit I don’t know much about stress loads on pavers, but I do know how easy it is to split one in half with a quick strike.

Re: i should get hit
I have been caught under a vehicle, and I would not trust concrete, I have to agree with bruceman. I have 1/2" steel plates just for jack stands on my asphalt driveway
