help ..

ok ..heres whats going on ... first i work about 5 miles from my house ..so i usually make very short trips with my truck... just recently my truck has started idling really rough and wanting to die when ever i come to a stop ... my alternator also has been making a strange noise ...started around the time i notice the idle problem ... it very intermetant ... i bought some alternaor cleaner but haven't tried using it yet(damn rain) ...

any suggestions ??
i suspect
1. the alternator is going out
2. my fuel filter is blocked some
3. my 350 is on its way south ( i hope not )

thanks

I suspect the idle problem is connected to the dampness and cooler weather as carbs will act that way. It helps if you have a working exhaust manifold/heat tube to the air cleaner setup that came stock on these trucks. We don't have any on our trucks and they are miserable to drive under these cold damp conditions until they warm up, completely.

If the crossover ports are plugged on the intake manifold, the problem is worse.

The alternator sounds like a different problem, perhaps the front bearing is going out?

Good luck!

71,

Jim has some good suggestions. Also, your short trip note made me think. Short trips will really play havoc with engines. They just don't get hot enough to clean everything out.

Rough running could also be caused by fouled sparkplugs from these short trips. Have you tried basic tuneup items?

71-longbed, check your distributer and make sure it is still dry on the inside, sounds like the way mine did when I was missing the hood to cowl seal and the rain got to my distributer. And it sounds like the bearing is going out on the alternator.

yea .. with all this rain ...when ever i do have to pop the hood ..rain pours off the hood and lands around the distributor ... and i dont have a manifold stove hooked up either ....

spark plugs are only about 3k old ... cap, coil, rotor are new within the last 3k as well ....

i guess for now i should just let it warm up longer and hope i get some rainless time to check a few things ... i wish i had a garage

bigvinnie... the stuff i bought is called Lectra-Motive ...made by CRC ...its a general electric parts cleaner
