51' GMC 3/4 ton.. Tell me about the wheels...

Starting to work on my project that me and my brother had to put back into storage...

Question is... He said he checked about 10 years ago getting the tires dismounted, and he was told they were 2-piece wheels, and the place couldn't do them..

Any truth to this? Haven't been near the truck in a while because it's still in storage at a family friends shop, but I don't think that made sense, but I could be wrong....

Anyone?

i believe they are called split rim wheels and you have to be careful when you do dismount them. i think not a whole lot of shops do it .

Yeah those would be split rim wheels. They were deemed dangerous I believe back in the 70's. I believe about the only places left that dismount them are some heavy truck shops. If you don't care about them I would give them the ol heave ho and find some replacements.

If you try and dismount them yourself take some heavy chain and wrap the ring in 2-3 places and secure it with a bolt. Those rings can come off with some force and kill or maim you. When I was in the service the base tire shop had an arrow on the cage pointing to a bulls eye on the wall high on the other side. That was were the ring hit after bouncing off the guys head. I ran them in the boonies with spare tubes so I could fix them if I had too. Keep the chain on when you air them up too. Most commercial places will not work on them because of the liability. I recycled mine in 85 and use two regular spares.

Be careful with split rims mate.

Friend of mine was killed when pumping up a truck tyre that was on a split ring. The ring has the potential to spring off under pressure with a hell of a lot of force and a lot of shops won't touch them.

He had actually finished inflating the tyre and it looked OK but when he was crouched down in front of the hub, wiggling the wheel on, the ring sprung off. Not good and it means that they are never really a safe bet.

We used to put them in a small cage when putting air in after mounting or repairing a tyre so that it would contain the ring if it popped.

Not too much danger if you let the air out to get the tyre off the rim, more so when you are pumping up. I wouldn't use one these days.
