92 5spd swap in my 70

Is this smart to do? Im really wanting to get rid of the t350 and go standard. Just found a 92 truck 5 spd on craigslist for 150. Whats it take to swap? Can it handle 400hp sbc? Or should i buy it and save it for the 3/4 c20 i want for pulling stuff. I wanna make the truck more fun to drive

Search 'NV3500' (might also try MG5 or Getrag 5 speed) plenty of info on the forum already.

Put it towards the Cheyenne Super. That looks like it could be a good start.

If it's the NV4500, I would put it into the C20. I don't think you would want a NV3500 in a 400hp street truck. I would go with a T5 or T56. The early GM 5spds are Gertrag. I heard you want to stay away from them. Especially the heavy duty ones.

Re: 92 5spd swap in my 70

Its probably a 3500 and if it goes in my street truck itll be behind 400hp. If it goes in a c20 itll just replace the old 4spd as a work truck with overdrive gears as a dailydriver

Re: 92 5spd swap in my 70

I would do either a rear end swap, if you have the H052 you can do a 14bolt out of a 73-87 then you can run whatever gears you want. Or if you have the Dana you can probably get gears for those. The 14 bolt is what I want to do. You really can't beat those old truck 4-speeds. There fairly easy to rebuild. Novac has kits and instructions for them. I like my gears to run me about 2500 RPM at 65mph. 3.55 will put you a little over 2500. You can go clear down to 3.08 if you don't do alot of really heavy towing.

Re: 92 5spd swap in my 70

I'm currently working on a later model NV3500 (model year 93+). They're the single-rail 5 speeds, versus the earlier 4 rail units used until 1992. They're a bit more reliable than the 4 rail you're looking at on Craigslist, however from all I've read, they're fairly decent transmissions if you don't abuse them. For the power you're making, I'd say they're a little fragile for your application. I'm putting mine behind a 355 with an RV cam, Q-Jet, headers and Z28 valve springs (everything else is stock). Should be right on the brink of an NV3500s strength with that setup. I don't plan on abusing the truck though (burnouts, launches etc), so I don't think I'll break anything.

If you've got questions, let me know!

Why would i want an automatic. And no i live way out in the country. If i put a 5spd in my short bed it would be for playing and autocross. This 5spd would be better to swap in a c20 for when i decide to go driving up to north arkansas with an atv in the bed and parts running.

The stock five speed will not last under abuse... Spend the extra coin and get a tremic five or six speed
