Best way to get the primer off without damaging paint

Hey guys, I think I wanna take the black primer the PO put on my truck off and show the white that's under it. How would I do that without hurting the paint underneath it too bad? I don't want it to be perfect, just to get this primer off my truck... If not I'll just enjoy it as is!

Chief did it to his burb. I think he used scotch pads and alot of elbow greese. You would have to buff out the paint job after though. Maybe someone knows the link to his thread and will post it. It might even be in the builds section.

It would depend on what type of primer it is, you can try using thinners in a spot no one will see to see if it will remove it without damaging the under paint, other wise you will just have to do a lot of sanding just like chevy fleetside said.

I would recomend wet sanding with 400 to 600 grit paper, when the white starts showing back off and sand litely, keep the water running on your work area ( hose just about a trickle )...

WAIT on the sanding! like has been said, it depends on the primer. low quality rattle can stuff sometimes comes of with mild solvents and causes no harm to underlying paint. Try "Goof Off" or graffiti remover before breaking out the sandpaper.

I would rather wait on sandpaper also... I dont like to sand but if I have to I will. So the Goof Off or Graffiti Remover wont hurt the paint underneath? Will I have to take it off just in time before it gets to the paint?

my friend paid his little sister to remove all the primer off his civic a long time ago and she used paint thinner, I think she started with nail polish remover lol.. it worked good and was fast.

Oven cleaner and some fine MMM scuff pads works well...

If it is lacquer based primer you can dampen rag w/ lacquer thinner and test in inconspicuous spot. Lacquer thinner will lift some paints so be very careful to keep rag dry as possible. Probably need to color sand and buff after solvent wipe. Doesn't sound like fun. I hope the under lying paint isn't ugly.

If it is epoxy primer then doesn't sound fun at all. Epoxy doesn't sand well and is resistant to solvents.

I would live w/ it or repaint.

Well I guess the original paint was like a candy red! Ive broke through down to bare metal in some small places... But im off alot this week so im gonna try to get the whole truck done back to the color with as little as metal showing as possible.. Well heres the pics!

Just something to do... Didnt have any help today so just thought I would try it out... And the black paint on it just isnt what I want.

If I want patina Id just leave it alone. It has patina with the old black rattle can job. But just so I could do something and not sit inside all day I figured why not.
