rebuilding steering column - what is involved?

The stock steering column in my 67 GMC is missing a couple bbs in the bearing that sits right behind the steering wheel. I dont want to spend $500 on a new column, and a tilt wheel isn't that important to me. I'm thinking of pulling the steering column, replacing the bearing and the rag joint, then reinstalling. Is there anything else I should be looking at?

manual, 3 on the tree, or automatic column? there not too bad i think 3 on the tree is the hardest you have an upper and lower bearing you can replace them both if you like its good to clean it out then lube it up when assembling take care to keep all the parts in order of how they go together it will save a few min

Sorry, I should have clarified- the truck has four on the floor, no tilt. Should I replace lower bearing? Will the bearings need to be pressed in and out?

If its loose replace it mine was fine but I had already bought one I didn't press it on though I beat the old one to pieces to get it off and the new one went on pretty easy but I doubt it will need more than a good cleaning and lube

Thanks for the link to manuals, but i'm having some trouble getting them to open and download.

To change the bearing by the steering wheel, do I have to remove the steering column, or can I change that bearing with the steering column in the truck?

you just have to remove steering wheel for that.

LMC has the upper bearing.
