Re: 69 C10 Steering Column

Disconnect the column from the steering shaft, i just removed the bolt at the upper joint, and hammered it off, it comes off hard.

Remove the pin holding the shift rod to the column (assuming its an auto)

Remove the screws and bolts holding the column to the dash, there is a plate with 2 phillips screws, then remove the 1/2 bolts from the bottom of the plate.

There are 2 1/2 bolts at an angle that need to be removed to drop the column.

There is a plate at the firewall that has 2 5/16 screws, remove those.

Unhook the wiring at the top of the column behind the dash, and at the bottom of the column at the firewall.

I think that is all, i removed mine from the same truck 69 396 yesterday.

I think thats all i did. Take it slow, dont force it (except the joint to seperate the column and the shaft) and keep the bolts together, took me less than a 1/2 hour.

Re: 69 C10 Steering Column

ok thank you i will take a look. i am/was confused cause when i looked into the engine comp at the steering rod and bolts there are 3 different bolts. 1 all by its self and 2 more just a little above it that are close together. im not sure of which bolt(s) you are refering to...i will upload picture in just a minute for better reference. and yes it is an auto and 396 just as yours. so i hope you understand what i am saying

Re: 69 C10 Steering Column

i did the bottom one, where the splines slide into that joint on the end of the shaft. Soak the sheet out of it with PB blaster, it will help.

If you don't have them, download the service manuals here.
