Drum brake inspection question - never worked on a floating rear axle before
Would like to take a look at the rear shoes on this 86' C30 dually - also get them adjusted as the pedal travel seems long on this truck.
I've never worked on a vehicle with full floating rear axle. Do I dare? What tools do I need? Is there a sticky somewhere on this? TIA, Dave

pretty strait forward, just have to unbolt the axle & slide it out to get the drum off. beware when pulling the drums off, their right around 100 lbs & can take your finger off if you drop it

there was also a key locking the bearing nut on my 86 dually I used a magnet stick to remove it and yep the drums are heavy. when I did the other side I left the wheels on it made it easyer same as doing a kenworth

Far as special tools, about all you need is the socket to remove the wheel bearing nut. It's the same one used to remove nut on front hubs of 4x4 models of these trucks. At least the 1/2& 3/4 ton versions, not sure about Dana 60.They are fairly easy to set up the wheel bearings with this style key & lock as well. There will probably be other opinions about this, but I always tighten the bearing right up to take the slack out then back off to get a little play.Always better to have play than preload & never had trouble doing it like that. When I fill it back up with oil, always either jack one side up higher than the other or run it into a ditch so the oil runs to outer bearings.Do this for both sides.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I really should buy the factory manual off Ebay.

rubble is 100% right. but you can get that nut off with a screew driver no shocket needed. an same with install. done it that way on all 5 onetons i have with no problems. one other note when you take the drom off dont drop it on the spindle as it will ruin the grease seal on the back. did that once after a brake job had to do it again
