Alternator How Big? AMPS
I am just about finished installing my air conditioning kit into my 292 65 3/4 ton C20. Some hoses still need to be fitted and some holes in the firewall need pluging. On the test drive I discovered that the tired old alternator can no longer keep up with the load. It barely managed before I put AC in. I realize that I need to swap in a new high output alternator but how big? How many amps? How do I determine whats best. I'd rather not take it into the shop since this project is way over budget and getting worse. Thanks |

Re: Alternator How Big? AMPS
Sorry for the lack of helpful substance:
Are the wires terminals in good shape. The last time I purchased alt I just bought largest available at reasonable price. Without knowing specs and doing the math I'd guess alt amps on modern truck should be more than sufficient. |

Re: Alternator How Big? AMPS
I had the same trouble with a buddy's truck. We went with a 7127-1W (1 wire) and it couldn't keep up with the AC being on.
I did a little checking and found a 7294-1W (1 wire) is more amps earlier in the RPM range and overall. These are Endurance brand part numbers, if you don't use 1 wire, just substitute the clock position you want in the last number, ie: 7127-3, 7294-12, etc. Oh, the 7924 case has the same overall dimensions as the popular 7127 case, just higher amp. Hope this helps!
