Wheel adapters to change bolt pattern

How many of you guys are running wheel adapters to change bolt patterns? I have sets of wheels in 5 lug and in 8 lug, but not a single thing in 6x5.5. Have you guys had any luck with the adapters? I remember when I was young hearing all sorts of bad stories about them, but surely they can't be that bad. should I try and swap a set of wheels for some 6 luggers, or pony up for some adapters and go that route? Any other ideas? I don't want to spend a ton of money in this build, but I want it to be safe for my daughter.

Before buying adapters(safe enough today, imo!) ensure they won't 'outset' your tires/wheels to where they scrub.
