What exhaust kit??
Hey everyone! I just finished my engine swap and picked up some hedman headers (69096) I'm wondering if you guys could point me in the direction of which exhaust kit to get. I'll install it myself and weld it all up. What mufflers should I go with? I want it to sound badass but I don't want any noise tickets.
I've been looking on JEGS and stuff and they have 120$ dual exhaust kits that look like they'd work. Do you think i'd have any trouble lining them up with my headers? The kit I'm looking at http://www.jegs.com/i/Dynomax/289/89007/10002/-1 Any help and info is greatly appreciated! |

Re: What exhaust kit??
My '79 has stock manifolds, no cats, 2.25" pipe and Dynomax Super Turbos. It's very similar to the kit you're looking at. Good deep sound, not too loud at all. I brought the mufflers to him and he bent up the pipe to tuck it up under the truck, so I can't comment on how well that kit fits, but it will sound good.

Re: What exhaust kit??
looks like it angles back behind the rear wheels. looks like a niced system, does look like they used crush bends (so last decade) instead of mandrel style
IM assuming your truck doesnt have the rare double hump crossmember and is 2wd but you will need an s bend to clear the crossmember on the drivers side to get to the header if your on a budget i always suggest the thrush welded series mufflers, they are basicly copies of super 40 flowmasters but sound a little different if you want a very unique sound and maximum performance spintech is the new age super muffler thats coming on strong, maybe try the edelbrock sdt mufflers, havent heard or tried those yet so cant say wether they are good or bad another thing to remember THERE IS NO GOOD FITTING EXHAUST KIT MADE EVER so expect some fabrication skills to come into use

Re: What exhaust kit??
cut/plateing the crossmember will hide the pipe
keeps it straight

I purchased a "Heartthrob" 2 1/4" kit and was very happy with it.

Re: What exhaust kit??
I have one on my truck and it made running the headers easier, I installed it when it was just a frame and I had to use a bottle jack and some steel to spread the frame to get it in. Once it was in it was great. As far as dimensions go it goes from inside the frame rails so you could just measure that and go from there.

Re: What exhaust kit??
nope all new hangers but they bolt on easily! I just welded the pieces that came with the headers onto the first pipe and bolted the rest I can get some pics under the truck tomorrow, It looks clean, and tucks up nicely.

Re: What exhaust kit??
Thanks man, I'm just a kid in high school so this sounds like the way to go. I really like the sound to you can hear the engine tone but your not overwhelmed by it.

Re: What exhaust kit??
Yeah I'm surprised how good it sounds, prolly has a lot to do with the headers as well. I just kinda bought the kit not knowing lol I'm happy with it. Its not that loud either so I don't think i'll get into that much trouble.

Re: What exhaust kit??
Glad to hear the kit fit nicely. Sounds like dynomax did their research when making a kit for these trucks

Re: What exhaust kit??
Ive actually been looking into get mine done too seeing how mine is shot and has been since I bought it. I need new mufflers too. I was going to just buy some headers and send the truck to someone to do custom pipe work but heck if I can save money and do it all myself I will. I just have to get the tranny worked on first then will get the exhaust done. Thanks for the post and the video! Much help and good question.

Re: What exhaust kit??
Hi Telecasterjoey. I am thinking about buying this same exhaust setup and my truck is also an 86 and it originally had a y pipe, single exhaust with a cat. I now have long headers so I am wondering how this setup deals with the stock single exhaust cross member. Would it be possible for you to take some detailed photos of the underside of the truck from the headers all the way back (Especially to show how the pipe goes past the cross member) so I can get a better idea if I will have to modify anything?
Thanks! |
