64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Well I thought I should start a build thread. Here are 2 previous threads to my truck.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=544074 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=567265 I rebuilt the front and back brakes and got the new shocks on. I got some 62' Stock 15x6 wheels from forum member 62barnfind. Thanks John I fired up the sandblaster and got two of them blasted yesterday. My plan is to paint them red. I ordered a set of Wide Whitewall tires and they are on their way. Can't wait til they get here. After the wheels are done my next project is rebuilding the front suspension and then pulling the cab glass out cleaning and painting it White and getting new glass and rubber installed. Bret

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Yesterday I got the other two wheels blasted. All of them primed and painted.
1 coat of primer. 2 light coats of red and then a final wet coat. Backside came out better than I thought they it would. I bought some body supplies. I have more on the way from TCPGlobal I started on the cab. I am going to be sanding for days. This 80's Enamel paint job is about an 1/8 thick. LOL I have 2 large dents on the top of the shelf at the back of the roof. Looks like someone dropped 2 bowling balls. My tires will be here today. Can't wait to get home from work this evening. I plan on getting them mounted tomorrow. Will post pics when they are done. Bret

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Wheels look good. They are going to look even better with the new tires on them. You were right, you have a lot of sanding to do. What about using stripper to scrap off all that old paint? Just an idea that may make your job easier. Keep it up and the cab will be done before you know it.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Thanks Guys. Got the wheels on the truck this morning. WOW what a huge difference they made in the feel and look of the truck. It is much easier to steer now. The wife should have no problem.
Took it for a test drive it rides real smooth. Still couldn't get over how much easier it is to steer. Now that most of the mechanicals are in good working order. The next project is the interior and new glass and rubber for the cab. Bought all the paint for the truck its on its way. Going to cut the glass out. Sand and paint all of the interior. Put in new floor pans and driver side rocker panel. Paint the top half of the cab white. Then have a new windshield and rubber installed. Also plan on getting all the gauges refreshed, heater controls working, carpet, and a nostalgic stereo that is ipod friendly. Thanks for looking. Bret

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Pulled the windshield out today. Started stripping everything down. Got the top of dash to the metal and sprayed with some self etching primer. Really enjoyed todays work. The pictures are kinda boring though.
Didn't find hardly any rust. Just a little on the bottom curve of the driver side. I do have 3 pin holes though in the top underneath on the driver side that I will have to cutout. Sorry to the guys in the North. I'm pretty sure this is the original window seal as all the paint underneath was the white color and red primer underneath. Bret

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Pulled everything out of the cab and dash and started taking it down to the metal. Also pulled the back window out. I went over the entire back, roof and dash with 80 grit paper on my ROS. Was happy without how it came out. So I pulled out my right angle grinder and put a wire cup brush on it. It takes it down to the metal pretty easy but does require some push behind. After about 4 hours of this my arms give out. I got about 1/4 of the top and the back done!
Can't wait til it is all done as all my paint arrived from TCPGlobal today. I also got an original behind the seat tank and all the parts from Johns66. Thanks again John. Bret

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Made some progress today. Stripped the entire top half of the inside cab down to the metal. Feels really good to have that done although my arms are really sore. I forgot my good camera so these cell phone pics have to do. My next step is to finish stripping the dash, the backwall, and then fixing the floor and rockers.
All my other photos are down right now due to Fotki changing servers or something. Hope they come back up soon. Bret

Thanks T.J.
Small update I cutout the terrible patch on the drivers side. It wasn't as bad as I thought underneath. Floor pan and rocker panel in my future. Bret

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
That repair really isn't hard if you get the replacement panel. The rocker is easy also if the metal is good under it. You are going to need a spot weld cutter for the rocker. You can get one on line or at Harbor freight. I did mine before I bought one. It would have made the job eiser if I had it. You will also have to shappe the rocker in place one you have it tacked in. Looking good, Good luck with it!

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Thanks John. I am hoping the metal underneath is good. Don't have the funds right now for the replacement panels. So I will keep chugging on other stuff. I get 2 Xmas bonuses this year so hopefully there will be some truck funds in there.
Here are the 2 panels I plan on buying for both sides. Are these all I need. The kick panel seems fine. http://www.topbananaparts.com/driver...r-section.html http://www.topbananaparts.com/driver...ker-panel.html I got the back wall done and half of the floor. My floor looks like swiss cheese. A bunch of 5/8" drilled. Apparently my BIL didn't know how to measure for the stupid van seats he put in. So he filled all the holes with terrible fiberglass patches. Also anybody know what the hole in the top right corner of this pic on the hump is for? It looks factory Bret

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
You can weld them up. If you have a spot weld cutter it works great to for metal for holes. Use a piece of metal drill out the metal circle, you will need a maginet to hold it in place. Weld it and then grind it off smooth. Real easy, Good luck

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Some more progress. Got all of the floor done and the driver side. Still have a little bit on the passenger kick panel and then onto the doors.
I have 35 holes to weld up plus the two holes on the hump. I have no idea why somebody would cut a hole in the side like this. Bret

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
I got all the holes in the driver side floor welded up yesterday. 18 altogether. Pics are crappy from my phone. I ordered some sheet metal from Top Banana. I have a 10 day vacation starting Thanksgiving day so hoping to tackle both rockers and floors then.
My wife found another photo of the truck when my father in law bought it in 1981. It has a different rear bumper that wraps around. Glad he changed it. Nice wire wheels too! LOL Bret

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Thanks guys.
Got the steering wheel all sanded down and primed so I can see all the cracks I need to fix. Not to bad. Worst part is around the center. Have some hairlines on the rim. Bret
