Loss of power steering
Good day. I have a problem and just looking for a little input.
I have a 2005 Chevy Silverado Extended cab Short box Z-71, 4wd, 5.3, 126,xxx miles. Recently I have been having what I could only describe as loss of power steering at low speed and idle. It has been a intermittent problem. Now it seems to be getting worse. If when this happens and I give the truck a little throttle the power steering comes back. I checked the fluid level and it is fine both hot and cold. The truck does have the P/s Cooler as part of the Off road package. I really don't want to take this to a dealership and get raped saying the whole steering system has to be replaced. I have read on a couple of posts that there is a small electrical piece on the pump for the speed sensitive power steering. Just wondering if that may be it. If anyone here has had this happen to their trucks any input would be appreciated. Thanks Phil

Re: Loss of power steering
Yea talked to a mechanic at my dads work. He said the same thing. Now just trying to find one. Its turning into a pain in the a$$. Multiple pumps available. Apparently it goes by the options on the truck. You would think that a Z71 equipped truck would have the Off road package option but not according to the service parts id sticker.

Re: Loss of power steering
The Z71 is the rpo for the off road package. If it is a Z truck it will say so on the rpo label in the glovebox on the last line.I am pretty sure that any pump from a truck in the 4.8-5.3[6.0] family would work from most likely say 03 to 07[maybe back to 99 but GM did a bunch of changing in the 03 model year and a lot of the wiring is different] I know the GM parts books always give different numbers to try to cut down on the inter change but I have found a lot of it will still swap around. Try car-part.com they use the Hollander interchange system that is the industry standard with the salvage yards in the USA and that will help clear up any unsolved mystery about it. Hope that helps without being to long winded. Jim
