Gas tank filler through flip down plate holder (55-59 truck)
Has anyone seen a rear frame mounted gas tank installed on a 55-59 flare side bed truck where the filler neck comes through a flip down licence plate bracket in the bumper?
Here is the closest I've seen, just not same year. I need to meaure everything up but it looks doable: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=448431 Also one more thing, my truck will get air ride eventually so it would be nice if it didn't get in the way of the truck laying frame (rocker)....but I can always fix that later. Wish I was at home to measure this up. |

I love the idea and had thought of this myself but always thought the tank would be too visible.
From looking at this one, I think I am right. The tank hangs a little too low to suit me...and I DON'T intend to lower mine severely. |

Re: Gas tank filler through flip down plate holder (55-59 truck)
Before the current tank I had a 69 chevelle tank in the back as a second tank. I used the chevelle flip down plate, I can't remember if I had to make a bracket for it or if it bolted up to the 59 holes.

Orrie,
Why did you change from what you had? I really would love to use the flip down license rather than a through-the-bed floor setup but I just don't want it to show. Also, I intend to use the bolt on U-Haul receiver hitch #75133 that I THINK Rudy? (Rude Dude) posted will fit. |

If I go out and buy a new tank, sending unit, filler neck etc... for in cab...will it smell....I don't reallly mind it behind the seat, but I hate the smell.
It's leaking pretty bad now...it is visible. before it was only when i filled up all the way. |

Oh, ok...sorry. I've also read that the receiver for a Chevy Venture/Uplander (now THERE'S a dork name for 'ya!) is a straight bolt up. eBay has them for $108. How much do you think the U-Haul one runs?

Re: Gas tank filler through flip down plate holder (55-59 truck)
Old tank rusted out, and when that tank was more than 2/3 full I could not go up hill, the fill tube was too flat. Strategy was to run it low first on the way in, then switch to the original tank behind the seat, so it would not be an issue off road. I always found myself driving out of my way to get gas to get home because the original did not hold enough. I used gerry cans for a while but got tired of the gas smell in the camper. The tank also hung down lower than the aluminum one I have (rock/log hazard) and the neck would have interfered with the receiver hitch. If most of your use is going to be in relatively flat country (not San Francisco) than out the back is fine.
I got my receiver for $3 (three not a typo) dollars, it is for Chevy (and maybe other) trucks with 34" wide frames. It bolted to the bottom, but I modified it to mount to the side of the frame because the gas tank bolted to the bottom. There are lots of them used around here usually in the $40-60 range. Mine was cheap because the guy had just bought the house and just wanted scrap value out of it and some other stuff that was left in the back yard.

Re: Gas tank filler through flip down plate holder (55-59 truck)
Both of those ARE nice. The mooneyes is waay pricey! Too rich for my budget, plu I wouldn't want it showing in my bed.
Someone JUST posted a link in another thread to a deal for a Mustang type tank but that will accept a generic GM/Universal sending unit with the 5 bolts instead of the Ford collet mount. I THINK it was only $219. Also, member ChuckDriver used a universal underbed tank from Tanks, Inc that was in the low $200 range too. |

Re: Gas tank filler through flip down plate holder (55-59 truck)
I agree that the Mooneyes was $$$ but it was just an example. This seems more reasonable if I went that route:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/270823385147?...84.m1438.l2649 I think I'm going with the Boyd Welding tank though. I think it will be perfect for now and then, when I finallly do the air ride, I can move the brackets lower in order to push the tank up when I raise the bed floor to accomodate the step notch. All said and done, I'll be looking at $500. and the best part is, I will see no performance gain out of it...haha well, aside from no grogginess from inhaling gas fumes. |

Re: Gas tank filler through flip down plate holder (55-59 truck)
One more question:
The Boyd Welding tank only provides an option for a sending unit with a 0-90 ohm sending unit, but it is my understanding that I need a 0-30 ohm sending unit. I've inquired with the vendor but thought I'd ask for advice here. Should I just buy this 0-30 from Brothers? http://www.brotherstrucks.com/prodin...number=ATK59SU Thanks for all your help. |

I don't like the looks of the Boyd welding tank hangers. they look like they could crack over time. JMHO

Thanks to Speedbump, I used this tank from Tanks, Inc.
http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/pa...prod/prd73.htm Here's a thread where I detail how I mounted it and routed the fill hose: (Jump to post #54 and the rest of my posts thru the end of the thread). http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...6&goto=newpost |

It works with a rear roll pan. Someday I will add the bumper, will need to slot the pan to do so..
