'64 Alternator Update?

I think it's time for a newer/stronger alternator.

Is there a direct replacement for the old 40 amp externally regulated alternator in a '64 283 to an internally regulated 100 amp range alternator?

Any issues with having to rewire anything since I do have the external voltage regulator?

Re: '64 Alternator Update?

Alot of people make this alot more complicated than it has to be, by running extra wires back and forth to the battery.
- I agree- look at Mad electrical- very easy diagrams, and no unecessary wiring.

It's really as simple as splicing one wire, removing the unused ones from alt to old regulator, removing regulator and taping up the harness. Should take about 1/2 hour, tops.

Unless you chose a 1 wire alternator- then it's extremely simple- mount new alternator, remove wiring from alt to reg. remove regulator. Install original wire from Batt term on alt to the Batt terminal on new alt- and you are done!

Re: '64 Alternator Update?

I went to Napa and got a 94 amp alternator from an 85 Buick Riviera. Internally regulated, better fan, better vented case, v-belt pulley. It will bolt in the same way. You can rip out and throw away the crappy external regulator, and then its a simple rewire.

Re: '64 Alternator Update?

I bought, but have yet to install an Endurance 7294-1W 94 amp alternator. It's a 1 wire, you can make up your own mind on that. You can also drop the "1W" and use a "12" to get the clock position that is like the alternator you have now, it's not a 1 wire though.
Hope this helps.
