Moving a 1972 1/2 sideways.

Hi guys,

In order to get the seat and gas tank out of my truck, I'm going to have to move it sideways to make room in my garage. Moving the truck outside is impossible until it's able to move under its own power.

Can I do it with two hydraulic jacks under the front and rear frames?

Should I buy a set of wheel dollies?

Re: Moving a 1972 1/2 sideways.

I've moved cars in my garage sideways with one good floor jack- One end at a time.

Pick up front, give it a push. Pick up rear, give it a push.

Only way I was able to cram 5 (five!) cars into my three-car garage.

Does it have any wheels on it? If it doesn't, I'd be leery of using 2 jacks at the same time. Move one end, then the other, if you don't have any wheel dollies.

Re: Moving a 1972 1/2 sideways.

I would say wheel dollies but the seat might go out the driverside with the help of a friend, maybe remove the steering wheel .. then if you have enough room, pull the tank toward the passenger side as far as it will go and then see if you can swing the filler end of the tank out the driverside...

Re: Moving a 1972 1/2 sideways.

OH wow! No idea how to remove a steering wheel!

The truck still has all 4 wheels and tires on it.

Is it OK to just place the jack (wood block between jack and frame) under the frame piece that's directly under the engine?

Re: Moving a 1972 1/2 sideways.

Why the wood block? Are you afraid you'll damage the paint on the chassis? If you're worried about that, go get a wool buffing pad and put that on the swivel plate on the floor jack. Putting a wooden block on a jack, then jacking the vehicle makes for some squirrelly situations. Trust me on that. But, you'd have to be worrying about damaging a pristine chassis and I don't think you are there, based on what you've asked in this and other posts. You are just now starting to take your truck apart, right?

Re: Moving a 1972 1/2 sideways.

Well man,

That's how my dad has always done it and I've always used a hydraulic jack the exact same way. Talking about a 1 inch thick piece of wood here. But anyway.....yes, this is my first time working on this thing....I am rather inexperienced when it comes to working on cars/trucks.

I guess I'll just have to try it. I really don't want to buy wheel dollies for $150.00 and never use them again.

Re: Moving a 1972 1/2 sideways.

Some of the wheel dollies I see advertised have pretty small casters so your floor will need to be slick finished.

I use a floor jack and move one end at a time.

like most guys here have said.. you can put a jack under it then slowly move it one end at a time but it is a little scary and not fun.. as far as removing the steering wheel it is a piece of cake.. you wiggle the horn button off.. then remove the center bolt.. take a trip to your local autozone, advance auto etc.. etc and borrow a 'steering wheel puller" (most parts stores have a loaner program) follow the directions with the tool or do a search on youtube and boom.. steering is off

Steering wheel is super easy in these. A real basic puller is all you need. Here is a link to a $10 puller. May be cheaper to buy one rather than rent.

Nothing scary about it if the tires are just an inch or so off the deck. The floor jack can be at an angle and the truck will move obliquely.

You can buy wheel dollies at Harbor Freight for about $40.00.

Re: Moving a 1972 1/2 sideways.

Ive always jacked up the rear placing the jack under the pumpkin. Ive done it both ways, pull on my jack or had someone push on the bumper. Just dont jack it super high, all you need to do is get the tire off the ground.

Id skip the wheel dollies also. Sounds like your short on space as it is. BUT! if you plan on the truck taking a while to finish, it may be more convenient to have the truck on dollies if its going to be in a cramped garage for a while. Would be a real pain to have to bust out the jack everytime you need to move it.

I assume that's for 4 dollies so that means 16 casters. Each caster would have to be awfully cheap to fit in this price. HF stuff is usually junk.

Re: Moving a 1972 1/2 sideways.

I've done it with one jack, one end at a time, many times. But bought some dollies resently and it's sooo much easier !

HF has a few different levels of dollies, the ones I bought where about $60 for 2. Not the top of the line, but they do the job !

Re: Moving a 1972 1/2 sideways.

The Harbor Freight dollies are tempting, but I really need to watch what I spend.

I think I'll try it with just the jack. As soon as I get a helper, I'll try moving it.

Thanks for all the suggestions,

ITTR

I moved my '67 C20 yesterday by myself with one floor jack on not so smooth concrete. I'm not very big at 155 lbs. and I'm 72. Took about a half hour to move it 10 feet. Tomorrow I move it back to middle.

Harbor Freight stuff doesn't tempt me anymore. Cheap stuff used to make me think I was getting a bargain but then when it breaks you now need to get that full price tool. The half price tool is a throwaway so that makes the full price tool ring up at 150%.

I used to store my 71 C/10 LWB in my Granny's 1-car garage. I'd put the small hydraulic jack under the pumpkin and cheat it to the wall. PITA.

I picked up some dollies from Harbor Freight. Coupon special, 2-fer about $35. Got a set of 4, "diamond plate" finish, seem pretty sturdy. Plenty good enough for rolling on a garage floor in tight quarters.

Don't take a chance ruining your jack. Or worse, damage the truck if it shifts off the jack.

Re: Moving a 1972 1/2 sideways.

Dollies work well on a smooth clean floor without any saw cuts or spalling. Not very well on a rough or uneven surface.

Re: Moving a 1972 1/2 sideways.

HF stuff works, you just have to rally look at what you are buying, you can't by the cheapest version of what they have, I have there big 42 inch tool chest and I have to say, its better than anything crapsman puts out nowadays. have a couple of 30 and 40 dollar 3k portable winches I scrap with and I have abused the **** out of em for years and they haven't giving me a lick of trouble. You just have to know what to look for. Hell I have the small furniture dollies that I move my 77 impala around on.
