What makes a custom cab?

I have a couple of C-10's ones a 65, the other is a 66, the 65 is a big back window and has custom can emblems on the side of the cab, I always thought all factory custom cabs had the big back window, I see quite a few trucks on the road with the custom cab emblems but with small back windows, I just took it for granted that that was an owner add, But yesterday I was talking to a local guy that owners a carlot called hotrods and harleys, he specializes in customs and bikes, he said that the big back window was an option to itself and you could get a custom cab either way. is that true, and if so just what makes a custom cab, custom?

Re: What makes a custom cab?

He is correct, i have a custom cab with the SBW (just changed it to BBW). I think the BBW was called the panoramic view option? I THINK custom cab included the trim pieces on the pillars, two tone paint, seat padding, and steering wheel with horn ring? I'm sure there are other little things, there are a couple threads about factory options and details that you can get lost in reading for most of the day, pretty interesting stuff.

If you search for the 66 glovebox codes, we went through a lot of the options you would see on the sticker in the glove box (custom group (2 of those) panoramic view, etc, etc)

The Custom Cabs also had the chrome windshield moulding and rear window trim.

Re: What makes a custom cab?

I thought the rear window trip chrome was aftermarket? Not really chrome but chrome colored plastic coating on the lock bead? I do have the stainless around the windshield though, that seems legit.

Yes, the Deluxe option was independent of the standard rear window or the panoramic rear window.

Re: What makes a custom cab?

learn something new everyday, My 66 is a small back window, with 2 tone paint, painted bumpers and grill, my 65 is a big back window 2 tone paint with chrome bumpers and aluminum grill. and your right my 65 has chrome around the windshield, but the 66 doesn't. Thank for the info, all these years I was thinking folks had been adding those cab emblems.

Your correct. The chrome bead in the rear glass channel is aftermarket. In 1960 & I believe 1961, there was a stainless strip that ran across the back of the cab connecting the sail panels together.

Re: What makes a custom cab?

Not to hijack the thread but how do the Pillar "Custom" cab trim attach? Anyone have any pictures of the back of the trip pieces? Mine is not a custom cab I do like the trim and have thought about putting it on mine.

Re: What makes a custom cab?

There is a thin piece of metal, about 5 inches by 1/2 inch, that screws, upright, to the rear side of the panel, then you slide the custom trim on to that, and secure it with screws in the door side, and i THINK the tail that wraps around? So the thin strip bracket and two screws are hidden

Correct. 3 screws in the door jamb and one on the back of the cab where it wraps. The retainer pad that mounts on the side of the cab is held on by two screws also.

Re: What makes a custom cab?

I just sold a 64 cab that was a BBW but was not a custom cab, just a plain Jane work truck. The only options it really had was the deluxe heater and big back window. BBW's were not always custom cab trucks.

Re: What makes a custom cab?

Blank 1966 Order Form. Lists the RPO ( Regular Production Order ) codes for building your truck the way you wanted. Notice there is no custom cab option.

1963 Chevrolet Truck Data Book information. The Salesman would use this book to explain to customers the different options available.

Re: What makes a custom cab?

Mine would seem to be a "Custom Cab" but it just had all of the options normally associated with a "Custom Cab" truck even there was never such an option.

Has the Z61 and Z62 Custom Group options, B98AA Side Trim Moulding, V37EA Chrome Bumpers F/R (includes chrome hubcaps), and A10AA Panoramic Cab.

They probably used a different shock from stock as the truck was ordered w/auxillary springs which gave 500lbs more carrying weight on each side.

Awesome Norm. This subject has come up many times, but this is the first order form I've seen. It pretty much spells it out. Thanks bud.
Curiously, with a revision date of 8/65 for the 1966 model year, it still shows the 230 cu.in. six instead of the 250.

Re: What makes a custom cab?

If anyone's interested, I took liberties while picking up a load of aluminum ingots to make photocopies of the 1966 order sheet on the suppliers photocopier. The copies came out clear though short on the bottom where it's printed zone copy. PM me your mailing address and I'd be happy to mail you a black and white copy to study. I could fold the sheet to make mailing less expensive but if you would prefer I could mail it out with a do not bend printed on the full page envelope.
