Post auto 4x4 hub making teeth noises

uhm, i was driving my stepdads 82 K10 earlier today to go get stuff at store for exhaust work we are doing on a 94 grand Am and the left front hub started making horrible teeth grinding noises for about 1/4 mile at about 45 mph, freaked me out thought something bad was gonna happen to hub, so I slowed up til i could turn off and by that time it quit doing it, before it quit doing that i had made it to a stoplight ot take a left and after i got around corner and was coasting to turn off again and pull in a lot, i hear two thunks up there and thats it, no more nothing after that, i pulle dover and looked at hub and all looks fine, So i oput the truck in 4 HI and drove on that for about 2 miles and then when I got to other store i put it back in 2hi, and it was fine after then too. Ideas ? be worried ? its an NP208 truck with autolok hubs

thanks

Not normal.

Those auto lockers have a solenoid that engages/disengages the hub. I'm not sure about the full-size, but I know that on S10s, those solenoids have a tendency to go bad. Just pay attention to it. It may engage the hub and cause problems.

I'd tell him just so he can keep an ear out for it.

dont have all that on full size, i think jeeps do though in the 80s also they have vacuum operated axles too on some, like the selectra-trac models

They are not electric or vacume on the full size. It locks when you shift into 4 wheel and the transfer case turns the axle shafts. I had a similar problem with a ford that had auto hubs and I replaced the hubs with manual and never had a problem after that.

if it weas my truck i owuld switch it to manual hubs, but he dont wanna get out of truck and get dirty.... we tore ther hubs down and clenaed the meachanisms and re greased them a little and i took it out for test, and it was fien in 2wd so I put it in 4hi and cruised around and once it started screwing up, actinging like hub trying to engage and keep popping out and back in and out again really fast and so i pulled over and when i got ot stop i put truck in park and soemthing was still turnign under truck and it was hobbible teeth grind noise, i think it came from T case, but i dunno for sure, sounded like something was still turning the tcase or axle or something even though i was stopped, maybe the 208 case is dying, i dunno,. it was fine after that, both in 2hi and 4hi, i found out the hard way that you cant make U turn in 4hi.... truck doesnt like that....the front end cat walked on me around the whole turn... this was after the noise and pulling over and parking incident

hmmmm, ideas ?

thanks

I've had the same problem with every set of auto's i've ever owned. Sometimes broken springs, broken snap rings, broken teeth, or just plain gummy. I hate those automatic hubs. Tell him to quit whining and go get a nice set of milemarker stainless lockouts with the brass center. That's what I always do anyway.

he wont do it, he is bent on these auto hubs, i dont know why. we cleaned and inspected these hugs on it and they lolok fine, no tooth chipping or anything at all, so I dunno. I didnt tell him it screwed up in 4hi afterwards, I'll just let him find out on his own and he can do whatever, he is wierd about things, he does things i cringe at, like heating up cast iron parts with torch and beating on them- parts such as the steering knuckles on the front axle when replacing balljoints- and other things i dont really think are not good idea to do..

if it was my truck i would have tossed the autos a long time ago, but he doesnt wanna get dirty.... sigh.,,

thanks !
