OK< what rear axle can I get! (again)

Get whatever will fit and redrill your axels and drums.

Very true. Moser and other axle companies can match your axles. I paid $250 for new axles to match my 5x5 Porterbuilt front disc set up. Moser also build 9" rears with gm flanges or they take your old axles and custom fill & drill them to your specs for half what I paid for new axles

Lets say I bought an axle like Dave's 2000 4x4 ZR2. 4.3 liter AOD LS locking axle(that's a mouthful), and lets say its 4 3/4"? I can take those axles out and have them drilled? And the drums too? Or I can buy axles?

You can have them redrilled wont cost that much.

Ah, Denee,

When you replaced your pinion seal did you also replace the crush sleeve ?

Any time the pinion nut is messed with the crush sleeve and seal have to be replaced and
the pinion nut properly torqued to achieve the proper preload on the pinion bearings.

Too tight and you change the load on the bearings and position of the pinion gear in relation to the ring gear. Too loose same thing.

In the short run have your guy do the above and drive it.

In the long run and (money is no object) call Currie Enterprises and have a long talk with them about bolt patterns, gear ratio's, axel width, different types of locking diff's they offer and mounts. http://www.currieenterprises.com

BTW since you have the axle out of the truck, to get the proper axel width for the wheels you have, and here's where your lift comes in, set you truck on the lift at the ride height you want, then place the tires and wheels in the wheel wells where you want them to clear the bed side and wheel lip, now measure between the wheels mounting surfaces and that is how wide your next axle should be.

I didn't replace the crush sleeve, but I felt that I torqued it close enough for the sake of driving it. I think I'll pull the yoke back off, and maybe even the carrier and everything to see what's going on inside, but I feel I'd be wasting my time when I know I'd probably rather just get a different axle, like Dave's Disc,posi, etc. The axle of his S10 zR2 (still havent found out what the heck a zr2 is) is 62.5", and that would be good! The one I have right now is 63.5", plus the perches are a bit too close and really should have been removed and re-welded, the way it was was placing too much strain on the leaf springs. The 63.5" width was OK and just missed the fender by a 1/2!

Picking an engine and transmission is relatively easy, but a rear axle is a pain in the rear end!

The ZR2 is a 4WD S10 with an offroad package. Wheel bolt pattern would match your front, too bad you already bought wheels.

Well, it's not the end of the world I'll make this work. The place where Dave bought his axle doesn't have anymore zr2's at least on their website. I may go back to Dave's (just down the road) and take some more measurements and pick Dave's brain while I'm there~ he's quite a genius with a lot going on at his shop!

Ok, I took Glen's advice and put the wheels/tires where what I think would be ideal, dead center of the wheel well. I came up with 61.5" from mounting surface to mounting surface. I guess that's in a perfect world, absolute stock is 62".
So, going by the s10 measurements as somewhere above, or
2 wd s10 - 54.5"

4 wd s10 - 59" still too narrow

zr2 s10 - 63" However measurement of the zr2 at Daves was 62.5" and that was with the rotors on. So flange to flange would have been a lesser amount. My present axle width is 63.5" and works Ok. So, I guess I'll continue with the zr2 axle, but since I'm running a stock Th350, I'd like to get a taller ration for freeway driving.

Just purchased a 1990 s10 4x4 rear end 59" flange to flange ,3.08 gear .
Perfect. Hope my wopping 275 hp gen 1 motor won,t hurt it
