Grounding entire truck
Hey guys where are the ground strap locations on our 72 trucks I'm doing my first frame off and I can't remember where they all go. How many straps am I supposed to use on the engine 350 chevy

i dont know the exact answer to where.... but this is what has to happen... motor, chassis and body all 3 need to be grounded together... usually off of the back of block to body then a body to chassis strap.
i always add extra grounds anyways the way i want them to be.

I just replaced all my old/ missing ground straps on my 1968 C10.

1 from either side of the valve cover rear hold down bolt to the firewall ( equals 2 wires one for drivers side and 1 for passenger side ),
1 from passenger front frame horn on top of frame to the passenger inner fender. It attaches to the inner fender on the inner edge where as the inner curves downward just as it reaches frame height. 1 from passenger side front cab support on rear side of cab support to the passenger side frame. 1 from passenger side rear frame to 2nd from rear crossmember or far rear crossmember. I've seen them attached to both crossmember's about evenly and I've never found it in the assembly manual so the choice it yours on which crossmember you attach it to on the rear. The reason you use so many the body is isolated from the frame with rubber bushings and steel bolts are poor conductors of electricity so you can't rely on them to ground the truck for wiring purposes. people really do not understand the concept of grounding
a ground starts at each and every libht bulb and electrical unit and you must b able to follow that ground all the way back to the battery only reason to never run a ground is ifin u r in a speedboat

I'm just new to electrical gmc Paul do you sell a complete kit of everything that I need to ground my truck? If not running inner fenders do I ground my fenders instead?

Don't over think it too much. All you have to remember is that all components (motor, cab, bed, radiator support) need to be grounded back to battery.
Starting from the negative cable going to the motor. One from motor to cab behind the head (normally drivers side). Install ground strap from bed to frame, frame to bottom of cab, radiator support to frame or battery negative. These are for better loop back to negative on battery. Don't rely on old bolts or painted surfaces to provide a good loop. Bought all the ground straps at the local auto parts for about $10.

I bought a grounding "kit" from Ron Francis. It comes with a bunch of different gauge black insulated wire with printed identification on each wire for each device or fixture you are grounding, a ground buss bar, a large flat braided ground strap and some instructions. This "kit" is not the OEM ground straps.
When I wired my truck, I ran a dedicated ground to every electrical device/fixture I have. All the grounds run back to the ground buss or to the battery (which is where the ground buss is grounded to) without using the truck frame or sheet metal as a path to ground (with very few exceptions). The battery ground is connected to a bellhousing bolt as close to the starter as I could get it. It was a bit of a PITA and I hope it will keep me from chasing one of those "crazy" electrical issues so common to these trucks. I read somewhere that "If it's crazy it's a ground". |

so its randy you did it for the headlights and everywhere they say to ground to the sheet metal. The reason that i ask is because i have a american autowire harness and i grounded my headlights to the core support.

Just make sure the core support has a dedicated ground to the frame and the frame is grounded to the battery and you should be fine. Remember that copper is a much better conductor than steel.
