Ujoint trouble

Hey guys and girls haven some trouble on my 71 gmc long bed. It has a two piece drive shaft. Well it needs a new center ujoint right after the carrier bearing. Haven trouble getting it out popped out the clips soaked it in rust penetrator and can't get it out. What am I not doing? Thanks for the help

Re: Ujoint trouble

Support the yoke on a solid place (vice works) and put a socket inside where the clip was and wack it with a bfh. It'll come out. You can put a bigger socket on the other side of the yoke too and do it on a cement floor.
Get your frustations out and beat it to death!

Yes, grab the BFH and beat it to death. Then you'll be buying a new yoke. Best to get the right tool to press it out or take it to a machine shop. The cost of a machine shop will be less than buying a new yoke and then getting it put together. You also need to keep the phasing right or it will vibrate. On a drive shaft BFH = $$$$.

Or you can take a large vice and set it up with a socket large enough for the cup to fit in on one side and a socket smaller than the outside diameter of the cup on the other side.Tighten the vice and the cup on one side should come out. Then turn everything around and do the other side.
They can be a pain to get out.

This is a little confusing. Are you having trouble getting the clips out or the bearing?

I've always done them like that and every mechanic I've ever worked with has done it the same way. You don't wack the yoke. You wack the socket and support the other side.
