how much sound deadener
Anyone now how many square feet of sound deadener I would need to do the firewall, floor pan, under the seat and up the back of the cab, also under the door panels. Any suggestions on how thick. 50 mil, 70, 80, 100. I know the thicker the better, but it also costs more. Is 50mil thick enough with padding and carpet? Anyone care to recommend a good product? dynamat, fatmat, gtmat? Thanks for any help in advance

Re: how much sound deadener
I used dynamat, you can see a few pictures of the installed product in my build thread. I used a tape measure to determine how much to buy. There are some good deals on fleabay to buy in bulk.

Re: how much sound deadener
Not sure on the thickness. Sure makes a HUGE difference in sound and temp inside the cab.

Re: how much sound deadener
If you want to save yourself a ton of money, take a look at Frost King air duct liner. It is available at Lowes and Home Depot.

I would also recommend getting some aluminum tape (home Depot, Lowes) for seams. |

Re: how much sound deadener
Here I go the broken record again - the mat products are not sound deadeners, they are vibration dampers. They won't stop road or engine noise on their own. They will, however, keep your truck's cab from resonating.
See www.sounddeadenershowdown.com. Firstly, if you believe what that guy says, you only need to cover less than half your sheet metal with a mat like fatmat to achieve the effect. Anything above that is overkill. BUT, to achieve sound deadening, you need to add a layer of isolation foam and then a layer of mass-loaded vinyl. There are "sandwich" products out there that have all 3. I know there are as many opinions on this subject as there are people and I'm certainly not looking to start a thread-locking argument. What I will say is I followed the recipe on that website and am very pleased with the results. Mass-loaded vinyl is a bit tricky to find - I oot my MLV locally, a guy had some surplus from a building job and I found it on CL. MLV is very heavy and shipping will kill you if you order it. Better building yards carry it. |

Re: how much sound deadener
there was an ad I remember...
they took a 4" square of matting and stuck it on a bass drum. it killed the sound.

Re: how much sound deadener
Yes, because resonance is felt and heard.

Re: how much sound deadener
Here are pics of my sound deadening project:
https://plus.google.com/photos/11025...CIHs7-nc5vabJQ I know a lot of guys do their whole interiors with mat and are happy with the results. I'm sure there is some reduction of transmitted road and engine noise with mat, maybe as much as with MLV and foam. I did hours of reading on this and other forums before I chose my direction, probably too much. It cost more than if I had just used mat on everything as well. Maybe I'll try all mat on truck #2 (the 1950 1/2 ton step I just bought) and compare the difference. |

Re: how much sound deadener
I too read a bunch on the subject of sound deadening. As I understand it; strips of mat ( I used a product called "Road Kill") with spaces in between is all you need, covering like 50% of the floor/firewall. I just couldn't believe the science behind it (true as it is) and covered everything that was going to be covered by carpet with mat and I'm not sorry I did.

Re: how much sound deadener
Did anyone run into any issues with the carpet fitment after the dynamat/sound deadening installation?
