Want to start my bag project. Need help.
Ok guys I'm really reaching out here. I'm in the Navy and currently deployed. I'm saving up some moola to get my '65 the way I want her. I plan on starting the project when I get home and I don't know where to start. My internet ability is really limited and it's taken me almost an hour just to post this. I've done a few searches but it's so frustrating I've given up and turned here in hope. I currently have c-notches in the rear and converted the front to disc brakes from an 80's C-10. I really want to bag her out and z the frame to lay rails but that may have to be later. If I buy a set up now and do that later will I have to buy new parts? I also don't want to come home and just start ripping stuff off of the truck with not knowing what I'm doing. I want a solid bag system and want to tow a 25ft +/- boat. Is there a start here for newbies thread? I'm open to all advice and know I need to proceed with caution. I have some welding ability but I'm no pro. Thanks in advance for the help.
Very respectfully, George |

Your 65 is a bit easier then mine to bag, but you need to read other peoples builds.
Nothing is magic, but you have to have a plan in place. As far as where to start I would grab another front end when your back home, and start in sections. I would pancake your new cross member, and cup the arms. Then when your confident you have them done you swap them in. This way if delays happen or things go wrong. You still have a paddle. I was in the Navy, and things magically had a way of turning into 100 hour weeks. |

do alot of RESEARCH...personally if I were limited to my abilities I would lean more towards the bolt on kits such as Porterbuilt or Scotts. Kits may cost more, but once they're on you can ride with peace in mind...especially if you're going to be towing. There's a million ways to skin a cat, but with proper research that cat ain't gonna claw out you're eyes

If you can swing the cash porterbuilt dropmember,no limit ifs or scotts hot rod shop ifs all will lay frame and bolt right in.Honestly if you don't trust your life with your welds i wouldn't try zing a frame its a big job to get it right.

Disc brakes on a 65 is already a good start. The spindles, bags & hardware can swap over to the PB (& possibly Hotchkis) set-up, but won't on NoLimits or Scotts. PB, Hotchkiss, & NoLimits offer rear kts that can also re-use the rear bags & truck arms. Porterbuilts is the only one I know of that's set-up to layout using truck-arms (NoLimits probs gets real close).

I think i read no limits ifs will lay out a 28 inch tall tire,Scotts will lay out a 31 inch tall tire also. And look at the prices of all of them a bolt in rack and pinion for the stock front suspension is about 3 grand. Both ifs kits are about that price range and porterbuilts price depends on a few things but in the small ball park price also.
