1957 Trim and Paint Codes

I have a 1957 Chevy Truck 3100. The plate on the driver’s door sill has the following trim and paint codes:

TRIM: 234A

PAINT: 769

I’d like to return the truck back to its original trim and color scheme, but I can’t seem to find any source to break the codes

I found that 769 is Cardinal Red.

Just go to Google and put in 1957 Chevrolet pickup paint and trim codes and you will have the answer on your own in all of ten seconds. That is exactly what 75% of us who might give you the answer are going to do to get the answer anyhow.

I did do a google search before I posted my question and looked at the available trim and paint code information. For some reason, trim code 234A and paint code 769 weren’t listed in the 1957 Chevrolet truck sections of the code references I looked at. Maybe I looked at the wrong Chevrolet truck references or just missed it.

Anyway, I’m still looking for trim code 234A – any help would be great appreciated – thanks again.

I have been collecting documentation for restoring my 1957 Chevy 3100 for 30 years. The 1957 Truck Data Book for salesmen is a great source for these codes.

Trim code of 234A is a RPO code indicating that your truck is a single color. The paint code 769 is the right code for Cardinal Red.

My truck has a RPO code of 431A indicating a Custom Cab. And its paint code is 782 which is Bombay Ivory and Sand Beige.

This Truck Data Book has paid for itself since I have been able to verify truck options and accessories. Now that the last child has completed college I can start sorting the fourteen milk crates of NOS parts and get the restoration going.

So the trim code of 234A just means the truck is a single color – Cardinal Red in my case.

I was thinking that the trim code pertained to the interior color. It looks like gray is the original interior color in my truck.

Yeah – my kids are all gone too. Now it’s time to get the ‘ole truck that my dad gave me for my 16th birthday back on the road.

Can't find the color page but I think the interior came in two basic colors, a grey and and a sandy beige. Top of dash was painted darker 40% matte color, face of dash ivory or bombay white.

Is there stainless around the front and rear windows and a chrome grill? Because I read that red and some other color that I can't remember were the only trucks with the chrome grill all the rest were came with artic beige grills. I was told if it has stainless around the front and back windows its called a double deluxe and that could have something to do with the trim code. My truck spot where the trim spot is blank just the paint code so it has the artic beige grill.

My truck doesn’t have any chrome around the windows (small rear window truck). Although the bumpers, grill, and headlight bezels are painted black now, I believe all of those items were originally painted white. The interior is gray, with a black dash top. Not sure if that is original or not.

The Trim code is key to a number of options when your truck was built. A RPO code of 234 is for all single colors. The letter at the end 0f 234 indicate the color. So 234A is Cardinal Red. 234D is Jet Black. And so on.

The RPO 341 indicates a Custom Cab option which gets you a bright metal windshield and side window reveals, and ventipane frame; two-tone nylon and vinyl seat fabrics; cigarette lighter; chrome-plated control knobs; dual sunshades; driver's arm rest; foam rubber seat cushion; chrome-plated grille, hub caps, headlamp bezels, and front bumper.

The letter after 431 indicates the motor and transmission combination. My truck being 431A is a 6-cylinder with synchro-mesh transmission. Letter B is for hydra-matic transmission.

All interior colors are Charcoal and Grey (sometimes called Marble Grey) except for the 3124 truck which have their own color codes.

Its been fun finding out all these codes for building my truck. Especially for the special accessories that could be put on the truck like the tray behind the seat.

So here’s what I’ve found for my 1957 3100 truck:

• TRIM: 234A = Single Color – Cardinal Red
• PAINT: 769 = Cardinal Red

So what's it mean when there is no number in the trim spot. All I have is 708A in the paint spot which is marlin blue and 114 wheelbase which is a 3100

The paint code is for the outside body color. And I think the trim is for options like interior, such as custom or standard, and the stainless outside trim pieces etc.
Most truck data plates have STD for the trim, meaning standard.
