Water Pump

Hello, I have a 1968 c10 and I am building a 454 30 over, electric fans, I just purchased the march pulley system, I also bought the long water pump, my uncle is helping me build the engine, but he told me to get the short water pump what is the difference and does it really matter?

I would think it would depend on which March system you bought. Mine requires a reverse rotation short pump as it has a serpintine belt

Did your March set up come with alt and p/s bracket? That will make a difference in what water pump you need.

when I ordered the pulley system I told them I had the long water pump, are there any pros and cons short vs. long

From a engineers stand point in 1973 when Chevrolet changed from a short style to a long, I have no idea why. The short is good when you have limited space in the engine compartment. The Corvettes actually continued with the short style system well past 1973.

If you already have the set up for a long pump and have the space for it, I would keep it. If you are looking for something that would be period correct for a 1968 pick up then the short style pump and pulleys would be the way to go.

The is as far as I know, no difference in cooling efficiency between a long and short as long as the fan / radiator distance is close to the same.
