A833 MY6 OD trans

I just picked up an MY6 OD trans and I'm getting ready to replace the saginaw 3 on the tree. Although I like the function of the three speed, I hate running over 3000rpm's on the highway. My engine is a 250. Does anyone have experience with this tranny that could give their opinion before I start cutting the floor of my truck. I know the gap between 1st and second is big. Do you feel that difference? I'll update with pics when the I get started. Pics would be great.

Re: A833 MY6 OD trans

I put one in my 2wd blazer, and it's sweet! The gap is big, but acceptable. I got a high hump with no hole and cut into it. No pics of it at this time. They came stock with a hurst shifter and a good place for parts is : http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_cata..._gm_truck.html
They rebuilt mine. not sure why aluminum case is not listed, but they do have parts and kits for them.

Re: A833 MY6 OD trans

I'm excited as I currently just replaced front and rear seals and put a gasket kit on. I didn't want to go to the expense of a complete rebuild if it doesn't pop out of gear, grind or hum due to bad bearings. I guess I'll need to buy a high hump cover or will the current one work?

Re: A833 MY6 OD trans

I'm not sure if the current one work? What kind do you have? if you have a low hump I beleive it would, if you have a high hump, the shifter will be much closer to the seat than current hole for a factory four speed would allow for. Also the shifter is mounted to the drivers side of the trans, rather than being a top loader. There are other members that I have talked to about their np A833's here on the board, but don't remember who they are. Another thing to consider are drive shaft length and crossmember placement. Everything I've read states they are the same length as a th350. I was able to replace a SM465 and retain the same bell housing and crossmember postion. Good luck

Re: A833 MY6 OD trans

Finally attempted to do the 3-speed to MY6 swap. Everything was going smooth until I wasn't able to slide the tranny in due to it hitting the cab floor. Looks like the tranny is 1/2" taller then a 3-speed when measuring from the top of the input shaft retainer. I hate to cut into the cab floor especially when it is the only floor section that looked imaculate. Anyway, is there any options out there to raise the floor a tad? I was surprised that it doesn't have a service access as my old 1952 chevy. Anyway any suggestions would be good as I plan to get it in this weekend.

Re: A833 MY6 OD trans

Thye came on the early 80's chevy 1500's. Its a 4-speed OD floor shift. Identical the older A833 used in the mopars but with the chevy bolt pattern

Look up board memeber "Green Machine". He has done this and had a nice success with it...

Re: A833 MY6 OD trans

I ordered my '87 with that trans and I love it.

It's smooth shifting and pleasant to drive, and of course the overdrive is a plus.

My truck came with the "high hump floor" (like a 4x4) from the factory, even though it's a 2wd.

Re: A833 MY6 OD trans

Well I was able to borrow a high hump cover while I waited for the one I bought to arrive. I put the trans in last night and realized the bottom tranny ears are not threaded so I had to buy longer bolts and nuts. Anyway, It went in easy and its almost ready to test drive. pics coming soon.

Re: A833 MY6 OD trans

What gears are best with this trans. Ive got an 87 4x4, v10 with 3.08's front and rear. I just picked up the trans and im thinking ill have to jump up to 3.73's. Ive got a 383 stroker in it, but don't want to be to hard on the clutch. Im currently running 2500 rpms at 70mph
