New to the Boards 1967 C20
Just bought a 1967 C20. Brought it home on Sunday. Paid $900.00 and he threw in a spare heater control, two new rear rims with snow tires, and everything I have here. The box in the back has a Small Gun Safe in it. Going to be fun having a new to me truck to work on, and use all winter as my comuter car. Wow the gears in it are low though. Has a 4:11 rear gear as I am told, and a 4 Speed Trans. When I take off in first it goes about 5 feet and would want second. From now on I start out in Second and just use 3 and 4 once it is rolling. Runs good.

Re: New to the Boards 1967 C20
Welcome to the board. Great looking truck to start with.
I also have the 4sp, and had/have the same issue. 1st gear is actually a granny gear designed for pulling. When driving normal just start off in 2nd. Basically its a 3sp. Your lucky though. I cant even get mine to go into first.

What engine does it have? Mine has the original 292 with 90,000 miles.

Re: New to the Boards 1967 C20
Welcome. Checked out the photobucket thread on the truck. Looks good. I like it. Engine is a V8, but I can't tell in the pics which. It's either the 283 or the 327 (I'd guess the 327). Looks righteous. Rock that bish...

Re: New to the Boards 1967 C20
I was told it is a 350 GM Replacement engine that was put in, but again only going on what I was told. I have not pulled the #'s off the block to see what it comes back as.

Re: New to the Boards 1967 C20
I love my truck's "granny tranny".
Starting in 2nd is normal, but there are lotsa hills around here, and when starting up a hill it's nice to get not have to feather the clutch. Just get it rolling in low, then begin to accelerate in 2nd. Clutch will last so much longer that way. The truck is getting a 5-speed to add an overdrive, but I'm not giving up the granny low. |

Re: New to the Boards 1967 C20
NV4500. I compared the gear ratios of several options.
The NV4500's first four gear ratios are very close to original, but has the additional .7/1.0 overdrive. There were both Chevy and Dodge versions. I got one from a Chevy so I know the bell housing will bolt up. |

Re: New to the Boards 1967 C20
1992 until about 2000 or thereabouts. If I remember correctly, they were used only in 3/4 ton trucks.
1992-1994 had a slightly lower granny gear than 1995 and later. Both gas and diesel, both two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive. SM465 1= 6.55 2= 3.58 3= 1.57 4= 1.00 NV4500 1= 6.34 2= 3.44 3= 1.71 4= 1.00 5= 0.73 |
