Where is the casting number on the intake located on a 396 BB engine. I'm thinking it must be near the back around the distributor becuase I havent found it near the front. If someone could a picture I'd appreciate it.

I'm thinkin' right in front of the carb. flange. Is it iron or alum.? Don't have any factory ones but several good pictures on EBAY.

I didn't see it near the front of the carb when I checked it initially, but these old eyes have been known to miss the odd detail the last few years. Its a stock cast iron GM manifold. The pic is of my engine.

That looks like a later model 454 engine with an aftermarket or hi-rise intake thats been painted.

Thanks for your input. I did get the block casting number from the block when I first bought the truck and the casting number is for a 396 from 1967 with a 2 or 4 bolt main. I checked the exhaust manifold numbers and they are from a 1973 Police 454 engine. I've never had a valve cover off so I don't have the casting numbers for the heads. Do you think my intake may be aluminum ?

Casting number is between the carb and dist. Get the number and date code and i can look it up for you.
Take a magnet and stick it to the intake and you will know if it is cast or not.

That is why I didn't see the number. The magnet idea is great.

I got the casting number off the cast iron ( the magnet worked ) intake manifold today. It is 3883948 and I didnt see a date code. My engine number is 3902406 and the exhaust manifolds are 353030 on the passenger side and 3994045 on the drivers side.

I guess all I have to do one day is get ambitious and pull a valve cover to get the casting number for the cylinder head.

Based on the site pasted below the intake is a factory hi rise for a quadrajet carb. It was used on several different cars. Based on the engine casting number it could be original to the engine, that would be my assumption anyway:-)

396-325HP L-35 or 427-385/390HP L-36

I bought the truck with the engine in it. I was told by the seller that the truck had a 396 which it does and had been recently rebult which ( by the way it runs ) I believe. Apparently the engine was from a Chevelle and was going to be put back into the Chevelle but the guy ran into hard times and sold it to the owner of the truck before me. Now I'm motivated to yank a valve cover and get the number of the head.
