need opinion on which carb to use
im going to use a 600 cfm (1406) or a 750 cfm(1411) edelbrock on my truck with the performer rpm intake i got. someone said using a 750 will be too much of a carb for my mostly stock 350 with hei and headers. will a 600 give me much better gas mileage? later down the road i want to build a nice 383 out of my 350. but for now is the 1411 too much of a carb. its a wopping 15 dollars of difference for 150 cfm... but how much of that money i am going to lose on gas with that 750....... NEED OPINIONS

The 750 will most likley be too much carb for your basically stock 350. 600cfm is fine for up to 350hp no problem.
The Edelbrock 1406 is a great daily driver carb. It is very easy for a beginner to install and tune them and have a good running ride. The jetting should be pretty close, if not dead on, out of the box for a stock or slightly modded 350. I have a few mods on mine so i had to jet it 6% richer to get it to run properly.

the 600 elde will do just fine on your mostly stock 350. the 700 will perform jsut fine also, due to the fact that the design of the elde carb is based on the old carter afb design. this design uses a secondary air valve to control fuel metering when the secondaries open so in other words it is gonna be good for up to 600CFM. The factory jetting should be close but may need some tweaking. It will run good out of the box. as a side note if you assume 100% volumetric eficiency of a 350 motor (unlikely except for a small window in the RPM band) you would have to turn 6418.2857142857142857142857142857
RPM to pull 600 CFM through the motor. I shift my mill at 6700 but I Damn sure dont run it there all the time. Go with the eldebrock 600 with the electric or go 750 it wont over carb due to the air controlled secondaries, but the venturi size is bigger so you will have a loss of power on the lower end compared with the 600, but you probably cant tell with out test equip. Why dont you use on of the best production carb made? Quadrajet.....***** to tune and set up but when you do......cruise all day.... race all night nothin like beer cans for secondaries.

I agree with the 600, you should also have better throttle response.

the 600 is the way to go. I have a 406 that has flat top hyper pistons, 202 valves, rough idle cam, accel distributor/wires/supercoil and some other goodies, and have a 750 and it is almost too much.

1406 here. I would take it any day over a Quadra Suck, because they are so much easier to adjust and work on, also I think the 750 would be too much for the basicly stock 350, also I think it will work just fine for your 383 conversion also!

I bought the truck this way. 383 Stroker top with a 600 electric choke Edelbrock. It runs great and is a very NICE carb!

Yep, as everyone already stated, go with a 600 CFM.
I have a Holly 750 on my 350 because I have 10:1 compression flat top pistons, 87-95 300 hourse heads that are ported with hardened seats and valves, a low rise Weland intake, Hooker headers and 3" exhaust. The cam is a 268/280 Comp cam. The 750 Holly is WAYYYY too much of a carb for this set-up. |

If you enjoy constantly adusting floats and flooding at stoplights and blown powervalves go with a Holley(I have owned several 600's and a 650 spreadbore and a couple of 750 vac. secondaries and they all do this )
Or you can buy a 600 Edelbrock and stick it on your motor right out of the box and never have to adjust anything but the idle. I run a 600 manual choke Edelbrock on a 350/mild cam and headers and I love it. I HATE HOLLEYS!!! |

Everyone has their own opinion on this one. I have owned both edelbrocks and holleys. If it is more of a daily driver, go with the edelbrock - they require less periodic tuning. If it is more of a street/ strip truck go with a holley, it will make a little more power, but they require a lot more tuning. I wanna try a speed demon on my 406. Anyone ever owned one or had good luck with them?

out of the 2 600 is way to go. If it were me Id use either a Q-jet ( cause I like em ) or a Holley street avenger 570 on a stock 350. To much gas really isnt the issue with the 750, its to much air. that 350 wont move enough air to need a 750 CFM till well over 6000 RPMs.

I prefer Holleys myself, but I like tinkering on my vehicles too! Like Oborny71 said, the edelbrock is the low maint. daily driver option, and the Holley is the power option.
There's nothin' like the sound of a well tuned motor!

Edelbrock 600.
Thanks what I had on my 350 and now on my 305. It's a great carb, you literally don't need to tune it! Good luck!

agreed on the Qjet... I dont have one on my truck, its a 770Holley Street Avenger, been flawless. but I had a prepped Qjet on the 402 in my 73 camaro, after trieing various differant carters, Edelbrocks & Holleys. A buddy of mine had a prepped Qjet on the 400 in his Goat, and I was amazed how well it ran. so I did the same thing, that Qjet was incredible. I paid someone who know what they were doing to build the Qjet & tune it for my car. but it was worth it.
I use to be partial to Edelbrock carbs for mild street engines, but these Holley street avengers have been great, Ive had 2 570s on my 76 short/step with a mild 305 & on my 86 Elky with a lil healther 305. now on my 454 I have the 770. John

The ed 600 IS idiot proof, but I love Q-jets. They are a little more involved to tune, but once you got them, you getter better fuel mileage, and more power than the ed.
