K5 help
1987 K5 blazer, 350, tbi. 49k original miles. Been sitting for awhile, new coil, cap and rotor, distrib module. Plugs were ok.
Runs like crap at idle, stalls, runs ruff when its running. I put in a new battery, fuel tank is full with clean gas from a month ago. Yesterday it idled and ran beautiful for about 10 minutes, i was inside the shop and i heard it stall. I went outside, fired it up, won't idle, and i now i have no throttle beyond about 1500, it just wants to cut out and stall. If i feather the pedal i can keep it going barely. Almost acts like a lost a bank of cylinders. Any thoughts, gas seems to be good, it doesn't have that ethonal foul smell, injectors are firing. Any thoughts? Trying to get this running good so my father will finally use it. I hate to tow it to a garage and spend $90 and hour untill i've exhausted all my options. Thanks in advance. Glen

Re: K5 help
Glen, is this the one you were playing with last year? I would check fuel pressure. Sounds like your pump may be laying down. Is it setting a CEL?

Re: K5 help
Jonboy, yes same one, had it running better this spring, but didn't get time to run it much, i had to change out the cluster, and i'm trying to get the gas gauge still to work.
Filter looks good, but i'm going to change it anyway. I'll look into checking FP. One of my customers was just in, said one of the injector solenoids might be bad, hence why it acts like its only running on one bank of cyl. I'm an outboard guy, car engine diagnostics is my enemy. lol

Re: K5 help
You might be able to check that by sight. There should be a cone pattern coming out of each injector. Pull the air cleaner and have a look while someone keeps it running. One of the injectors may be clogged also, could explain why it ran well and then not so good.

Re: K5 help
Fuel filter had some black debris in it, but it wasn't plugged. The gas however smelled like turpintine. So i pumped out about 8 gallons, and put a new filter in. Going to check the injectors next, i'm guessing one of them is got some crap in it.

Re: K5 help
Waiting 3 weeks for the damn mechanic to come back to look at it, he thinks the FP is not working. Wish he would hurry up, need to get this thing to the painters asap.

Re: K5 help
Try a little gas in a squirt bottle. If putting that down the butterflies works, it sounds like a fuel pump (or possibly a clogged injector) problem.
Can you see a spray pattern from the injectors?

Re: K5 help
THere is a little bit of fuel coming out of the injectors, but there is no pattern that he could tell. I think the injectors are plugged, he wants to do fuel pressure. Got a gauge he puts infront of the fuel filter.

Re: K5 help
Called the mechnic again today, still can't do it on his own time, so i'm taking it to where he works full time, i've checked all i can, and do all that you guys have posted. Its got to be plugged injectors is my guess.

Re: K5 help
The black chunks in the fuel filter were probably from the pump. My '87 Jimmy had some pretty nasty stuff come out of the filter and I ended up with a $160 tow bill for a fuel pump I had already bought. Runs great with a new fuel pump.

Re: K5 help
You can check your injector spray pattern with a timing light, just hook up the timing light like you normally would but instead of pointing it at the harmonic balancer, point it in throttle body and every time the number one plug fires its like getting a snapshot of your fuel pattern. I have used this method for years for diagnosing fuel concerns.
