Has anyone here painted moldings and trim?
The molding on my '68 is very straight but very oxidized. It will cost me over $1000 for the side molding, headlight/grille trim, and tailgate trim. I am building a nice driver, but it will not be a show truck. I am even thinking about painting the factory light blue, but in a satin finish. Anodized trim doesn't shine like chrome anyway, so I am thinking about trying to paint it. There are pretty "chrome" like paints out there now, and I'm thinking about trying something like that.
I painted a peice of taillight trim with the spray chrome paint and compared it to a new anodized peice it. It is not far off, and looks much better than old oxidized stuff. I know the spray stuff probably won't hold up, but I'm thinking about buying something like Mirrorchrome: http://www.kustomrides.com/mirrachrome.html Here is a pic of the cheap Duplicolor stuff and a new anodized part. The last pic is the Mirrorchrome vs real chrome. Anybody else done this?

You could also go a plastidip route. They have a way to do a polished aluminum look. And if you don't like it you can just peel it off.

My first thought was,"Yeah,Earl Scheib". I pictured the old "taxi paint job" where you save money and time on masking tape. Might not be too bad. Painting the black accent back in will take time and be tedious.

Re: Has anyone here painted moldings and trim?
The Mirrorchrome paint is somewhat translucent, and is recommended to be sprayed over a black base. I think I could paint it all black, use 3M fine line tape to mask the recess, and then paint the Mirrorchrome.

Re: Has anyone here painted moldings and trim?
I'm not sure how well the paint would hold up against the elements, especially when exposed. I considered doing what you're thinking of, but for interior trim. Decided to try aluminumn foil film before the spray. Anyways, during my search for paint, I found what many consider good quality: spazstix I don't know the brand you posted about, but if it's like Killer Chrome review They may all very well be similar. Spaz Stix seems to be popular with RC Hobbyist crowd. Possibly found locally at a hobby store. You'd probably be able to find youtube videos of it easily.

Re: Has anyone here painted moldings and trim?
What difference does that make? I'd go cheapest.

Re: Has anyone here painted moldings and trim?
I love cheapest, but I want something that will hold up. The SpazStix says it made for lexan, so I'm sure how it will work on aluminum.

Re: Has anyone here painted moldings and trim?
It sticks to the base coat I thought. So as long as the black base coat sticks...

Re: Has anyone here painted moldings and trim?
It is designed to sprayed on inside of the lexan RC body, and then black is sprayed on top of it to keep it from being translucent. RC bodies are painted from the inside out, so it won't scratch off when the car rolls over, etc.
