Vin # doesn't sound right..help!!

I'm purchasing a 67 GMC short bed and my vin doesn't seem to decode. It seems most vin # are 12 characters but mine is 14. Does that sound right? I'm new to this truck and will be on here tons. Looking forward to having her delivered next week but some items don't sound right. Thanks

Is this from the vin plate? Does it match the title? Does it match the frame rail stamping (driver side by the steering pump)?

Re: Vin # doesn't sound right..help!!

Awesome. Thanks. How come I was looking at 12 character vin #'s before. Quick responses... Thanks guys. I'll have a lot more questions.

One is that my GMC has a C10 nose. Why do people change them out?

Re: Vin # doesn't sound right..help!!

You were probably looking at Chevy VINs, GMC's are different.
As far as the front clips go some folks like the Chevy's better. Also if the grill got bent OEM chevys are a lot easier to find.

Re: Vin # doesn't sound right..help!!

1980 was the year the US, and everybody else, adopted a 17- digit vehicle is number system. It went into effect for trucks in '81. Before that, there was very little rhyme or reason, especially for different manufacturers. Now, there are certain bits of info contained in each position's character. The old system can be very confusing to anyone only familiar with the current set-up. I am also acquiring a '68 GMC, it was a 305 V6, 4 speed, but that's long gone. Nice and solid, and it'll get an LS and some creature comforts. Oh boy!
